South Metro wants everyone to have a fun summer, and that starts with staying safe.
SMFR’s Community Risk Reduction Team wants to share a few tips to keep you safe while enjoying the sun:
- Pay attention to weather reports and warnings when you plan to be outside.
- Drink plenty of fluids before, during, and after being outside in the heat to stay hydrated.
- Be aware of signs and ways to treat heat-related illness.
- Call 911 immediately if someone is exhibiting symptoms of heat stroke. These include red, hot, or dry skin with no sweat, dizziness or confusion, and unconsciousness.

Just after 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 24, 2026, South Metro Fire Rescue (SMFR) and Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) responded to a residential fire at 151 Flowerburst Dr. in Unincorporated Douglas County.
Multiple 911 callers reported that a deck on the back of the home was on fire, with flames spreading into the home. When Engine 20 arrived on scene, they encountered heavy fire conditions that had extended to all three levels of the house. Firefighters stretched a 2-1/2-inch hose line and began fire attack from the backyard, while additional crews made entry through the front door to complete a primary search.
Once the fire was under control, extensive overhaul was needed to extinguish hotspots throughout the house. Fire Medics evaluated one person on scene who did not require transport. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the SMFR Fire Marshal’s Office. Thank you to DCSO and Arapahoe Rescue Patrol, Inc. for your assistance.

Meet Tank the dog. He's not a Pitbull, German Shephard, or Mastiff, but he is an adventurous pup who decided to play a friendly game of hide and seek with his parents today.
But when playtime took a turn for the worst, 18 SMFR Personnel, including the full technical rescue team, and Arapahoe County Animal Control responded.
It no longer mattered that Mom and Dad lost the game because Tank was at risk of losing his life.
