The members of North Metcalfe Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad extend our deepest and sincerest condolences to Trooper Phillips’ family, friends, and coworkers.
We join with many others in grieving today’s loss as a member of our region’s emergency services brotherhood/sisterhood, and ask everyone to join us in recognizing Trooper Phillips’ sacrifice as well as Praying for his loved ones in the days to come.

Today, we face one of the most difficult moments an agency can endure as we announce the loss of one of our own. Trooper Hayden Phillips, Unit 369, made the ultimate sacrifice while
patrolling I-65 in Warren County. He was assigned to Post 3 Bowling Green and was a graduate of Cadet Class 103. His dedication to duty and commitment to the commonwealth will not
be forgotten.
Our hearts break for Trooper Phillips’ family, loved ones, and fellow troopers as we grieve this tremendous loss. We will carry his memory with us, honor the life he lived and the badge he wore, and stand together as an agency to support this family in the days ahead.
-Colonel Phillip Burnett, Jr.

What were North Metcalfe firefighters up to on this first evening of fall-like weather? 🍂 Training!

Tonight, NMVFD hosted State Fire Rescue Training with a session focused on Pump Operations and Water Supply with both frontline and reserve apparatus. These skills are critical to firefighting, especially in the rural and volunteer realm! While many career fire departments have dedicated Engineer positions, volunteer departments are not afforded that sole responsibility. At any given incident, a member may be relied upon to operate our fire apparatus as that unit’s Engineer and must be trained and confident in this skill as it is the critical foundation to any firefighting effort! Likewise, in rural jurisdictions such as ours, many areas are unhydranted. This requires large volumes of water to be transported to scenes and transferred to engines, or in some cases necessitate a true water shuttle operation.

The title ‘volunteer’ is not exclusive from the title ‘professional’. We appreciate our members’ commitments to training and strive to always provide a high level of service to our communities!

Tonight, North Metcalfe hosted Vehicle Extrication Training in conjunction with Kentucky State Fire/Rescue Training.

This course allows responders to familiarize themselves with the complement of rescue equipment and tools we carry, as well as operate that equipment in controlled scenarios to perform various maneuvers and interventions which may be needed during real-world incidents.

In addition to North Metcalfe, personnel representing four additional area departments attended tonight’s session. We are always grateful for opportunities to train and work together with our partner agencies!

Firefighters faced excessive environmental heat conditions during this response requiring frequent personnel change-outs and rehab. In total, 5 engines and 3 tanker/tenders along with 16 personnel operated at the scene in addition to EMS resources and the fire was successfully contained with no reported firefighter or civilian injuries.
