🔥🚒 FIRE SAFETY FACT — DAY 6 🚒🔥

SOME THINGS NEVER GO OUT OF STYLE.

Technology has changed.

Fire safety basics haven't.

🔥 OLD SCHOOL FIRE SAFETY RULES:

🚨 Check your smoke alarms.
🏠 Have an escape plan.
🚪 Know two ways out.
🧯 Keep exits clear.
🔥 Keep combustibles away from heat.
🍳 Don't leave cooking unattended.
⚡ Don't overload outlets.
🚫 Don't ignore warning signs.

And now we add:

🔋 CHARGE LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES SAFELY.

NFPA's 2026 campaign reminds us that safe charging habits can help prevent lithium-ion battery fires.

OLD SCHOOL FIRE SAFETY + NEW SCHOOL TECHNOLOGY = A SAFER HOME.

🔋⚡ FIRE SAFETY FACT — DAY 5 ⚡🔋

FULLY CHARGED? TIME TO UNPLUG.

NFPA recommends unplugging a device when it is fully charged because leaving it plugged in can increase heat and stress on the battery.

🔥 OLD SCHOOL FIRE SAFETY:

Remember when your parents said:

“Unplug it when you're done!”

Turns out…

Mom and Dad were onto something. 😉

🔌 Unplug chargers when they're not needed.

🔥 Don't leave charging devices unattended when you can avoid it.

🚪 And NEVER charge a device where a battery fire could block your escape.

Old advice. New technology. Same goal. PREVENT THE FIRE.

🚨🔋 FIRE SAFETY FACT — DAY 4 🔋🚨

FEELS HOT? STOP USING IT.

Pay attention to rechargeable batteries.

🚨 Unusually hot
🚨 Swollen
🚨 Leaking
🚨 Strange smell
🚨 Smoking
🚨 Popping or hissing

These are warning signs that something may be wrong. NFPA recommends stopping use of a device exhibiting these signs.

🔥 OLD SCHOOL FIRE SAFETY:

When something isn't right DON'T IGNORE IT.

That smoke alarm chirp?

Fix it.

That bad electrical cord?

Replace it.

That overheating battery?

STOP USING IT.

👀 Trust your eyes. Trust your nose. Trust your instincts.

🔥🔋 FIRE SAFETY FACT — DAY 3 🔋🔥

🛏️ SOFT SURFACE? HARD PASS.

Don't charge your phone, laptop, tablet or other rechargeable device on:

🚫 Beds
🚫 Pillows
🚫 Blankets
🚫 Couches

Charge on a hard, flat surface where heat can escape.

🔥 OLD SCHOOL FIRE SAFETY:

Keep heat away from things that burn.

That's not a new idea.

Firefighters have been telling people for generations:

🔥 Keep combustibles away from heat.
🔥 Don't cover heating equipment.
🔥 Don't create unnecessary fire hazards.

🔋 Today's battery may be different but the basic fire safety rule is the same.

KEEP HEAT + FUEL APART.

🔋⚡ FIRE SAFETY FACT ⚡🔋

CHEAP CHARGER?
DON'T CHANCE IT.

NFPA recommends using the charger and cord that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer. The wrong charger can damage a lithium-ion battery and increase the risk of fire.

🔥 OLD SCHOOL FIRE SAFETY:

Use the right equipment for the job.

We used to say:

🛠️ Don't jury-rig it.
🔌 Don't use something that doesn't belong.
🔥 Don't ignore a problem.

That advice still works today.

Different technology. Same common sense.

🔋 CHARGE SMART. CHARGE SAFE.

🔥🚒 FIRE PREVENTION WEEK 2026 🚒🔥

It’s Fire Prevention Week, and this year is a great reminder that fire safety starts at home!

🏠 Take a few minutes this week to protect your family:

✅ Test your smoke alarms — make sure they work!
✅ Have a working smoke alarm on every level of your home and outside sleeping areas.
✅ Practice your home fire escape plan and make sure everyone knows two ways out.
✅ Keep a fire extinguisher accessible and know how to use it.
✅ Never leave cooking unattended.
✅ Talk with your family about what to do if a fire occurs.

🚨 Remember: You may have as little as 2 minutes to escape a home fire. Make those seconds count!

The Central Ohio Joint Fire District is proud to work with our community every day to prevent fires and keep our residents safe.

If you need help with smoke alarms or fire safety, contact COJFD Risk Reduction Officer Chris Farmer at 740-625-5646.

🔥 Prevent. Prepare. Protect. 🔥
