🌳 Help Keep Centerville Green!

Centerville is looking for residents interested in serving on our Tree & Conservation Board.

We would love to have people with knowledge or experience in trees, landscaping, conservation, or related areas, but expertise isn’t required. What we really need are people who care about our community and are willing to roll up their sleeves and help.

The Board plays an important role in helping Centerville maintain and expand our urban tree canopy, promote thoughtful tree planting, and support conservation efforts throughout the city.

If that sounds like something you’d enjoy being part of, I hope you’ll apply! The application link is included below and applications will be forwarded to the Mayor for consideration.

🌱 Come help us make Centerville a little greener for the next generation.

Tonight we received information on the 400 East road project.

Construction will begin at the south end near Pages Lane and move north in phases. Each section will generally be completed by removing the existing improvements, installing new curb, gutter, and sidewalk, and then paving the new road.

The project is expected to take approximately four months.

Because of the proximity to Taylor Elementary, the City and contractor recognize the importance of maintaining safe pedestrian access. A crosswalk across 400 East near Elbert Avenue will remain available during construction as required.

I know construction can be frustrating, and I hope for everyone’s patience as this important infrastructure project moves forward. Please follow posted detours, allow yourself a little extra travel time, and be courteous to construction crews and your neighbors.

If you notice a safety concern or have questions during construction, please contact City staff through the City’s website. The more quickly concerns are reported, the more effectively the City can work with the contractor to address them.

A few additional updates from tonight’s meeting:
• The General Plan is expected to return to the Council agenda in late August or early September for additional discussion and possible revisions.
• The Truth in Taxation hearing is currently scheduled for August 25. Additional information is available on the City website.

I love the flyovers.

Several residents have contacted the City asking that personal fireworks be prohibited this year due to the dry weather and elevated fire concerns.

We appreciate these concerns and share the goal of protecting our community, homes, open spaces, and first responders.

Unfortunately, Utah law limits a city's ability to completely ban personal fireworks. As a result, Centerville City cannot enact a total prohibition beyond the restrictions authorized by state law.

We strongly encourage all residents to celebrate responsibly and to carefully follow the fireworks restrictions already in place. Please review the official fireworks restriction map before using any fireworks and avoid use in prohibited areas.

Safety should be everyone's priority this holiday season. Please use caution, keep water and fire extinguishing tools nearby, properly dispose of spent fireworks, and immediately report any fire emergencies.

Thank you for helping keep Centerville safe while celebrating our nation's independence.

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

The First Amendment remains one of the most important protections we have as Americans.

I believe it is our duty as citizens to defend constitutional rights, even when we disagree with the message being expressed. Freedom of speech is not limited to speech we like, approve of, or personally agree with. In many ways, the true test of free speech is whether we are willing to protect expression that challenges us.

Regarding the recent discussion surrounding the Pride flag displayed at the Centerville City Council dais, I personally asked that it be removed voluntarily. However, I do not support using government force to compel its removal at this time.

My concern is not about the specific message of the flag itself. My concern is about protecting fundamental constitutional principles and avoiding unnecessary legal conflict that could place Centerville at the center of a constitutional challenge.

Reasonable people can disagree on this issue, and many will. But I believe we should be cautious whenever government action intersects with an individual’s right to free expression.

These views are my own and do not represent an official position of the Centerville City Council or the City of Centerville.

Happy Wednesday Friends,

Reminder: The Centerville City Budget Open House is tonight, May 20, 2026, at Centerville City Hall.

Residents are encouraged to attend to learn more about the proposed FY 2026–2027 city budget, including proposed property tax, water, and sanitation rate increases.

This is an opportunity to ask questions, review information, and provide public input on the city’s proposed budget priorities and expenditures.

We appreciate community participation and transparency in this important process.
