🍂 Fall Nutrient Management Reminder for Iowa Farmers

As we move into fall and prepare for nutrient applications, NRCS, IDALS, and Iowa State University Extension & Outreach are encouraging farmers to wait until 4-inch soil temperatures are at least 50°F and falling before applying manure or anhydrous ammonia.

With a strong El Niño developing, Iowa may experience warmer and wetter conditions this fall, meaning soils could reach the “50 and falling” threshold 10–15 days later than usual. In Central Iowa, that date typically lands around November 10, but this year it may be closer to Thanksgiving.

Key recommendations from ISU Extension:
• Monitor soil temperatures, not just the calendar.
• Use nitrification inhibitors with ammonia and manure nitrogen sources.
• Consider planting a cover crop—especially ahead of soybeans.
• If manure must be applied early, use fields with an established cover crop to help reduce nitrate loss.
• Use precision tools like fall N soil sampling and N‑FACT to fine‑tune rates.

Practicing good adaptive nutrient management supports profitability, productivity, and environmental stewardship for Iowa farms.

You can monitor current soil temperatures at the ISU Soil Temperature Dashboard:

How did I not see this sooner? What an awesome idea to share conservation ideas with the youth! If you are familiar with either Conservation Station at the fair, this is the same group from ISU.

Celebrating National Honey Month this September! 🍯

A thriving pollinator habitat is the secret behind every jar of local honey. Bees, butterflies, and other pollinators play a huge role in keeping our ecosystems healthy and our food supply flourishing.

Planting native flowers, protecting habitat, and supporting local producers all help keep these essential pollinators buzzing. 🌼🐝
