FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
3rd Fire District Now Providing Paramedic-Level Care
After many months of diligent work and following the successful completion of an onsite inspection by the State of Iowa Bureau of Emergency Medical Services, the 3rd Fire District is now able to provide Paramedic-level care to the sick and injured within the district and the City of Central City.
Being able to provide this level of care allows the 3rd Fire District, when a Paramedic is available, to provide advanced medications and procedures to patients prior to the arrival of the transporting ambulance.
One example is obtaining a 12-lead EKG to identify a potential heart attack. When transmitted from the field to the hospital, the EKG can alert the cardiac team that a patient may be experiencing a heart attack, allowing the team to prepare for the patient's arrival and, when appropriate, take the patient directly for treatment to open the blocked artery.
By performing these advanced interventions before the arrival of the transporting ambulance, the 3rd Fire District can help provide earlier treatment and potentially improve outcomes for patients experiencing time-sensitive medical emergencies.
The ability to provide Paramedic-level care represents a significant advancement in the emergency medical services available to the residents and visitors of the 3rd Fire District and the City of Central City.
