Words have power! 📚
I've read To Kill a Mockingbird several times throughout my life, and part of what makes it so powerful is the very content that gets it banned: racial slurs, adult themes, and physical violence. It's one of my favorite books because its story is, unfortunately, timeless. Though set in 1930s Alabama, it could be retold today in any part of our country and still ring true. The novel explores racial bias in the legal system through the eyes of a young girl, Scout Finch. Her father, the lawyer Atticus Finch, defends Tom Robinson, an African American man falsely accused of ra**ng a white woman. The town turns against Atticus and his family because he is seen as defending the enemy. But Robinson is cast as the enemy simply because he is seen as the "other," someone considered less than because of the color of his skin. This is one of the most important books of our time. It explores the pitfalls of racial bias, the importance of standing up for what is right, and the need to judge people and situations by facts and experience rather than rumor, appearance, and the voice of the crowd.
