Have you ever wondered why so many Children’s Advocacy Centers look more like a home than a traditional office?

There is a reason.

For a child who has experienced abuse or witnessed something traumatic, walking into a large, unfamiliar office building can feel intimidating. Children’s Advocacy Centers across the nation are intentionally designed to feel safe, welcoming, and comfortable—more like a home than an institution.

When a child walks through our front door, we want their first thought to be:
“I am safe here.”

Behind this door, children may meet with a family advocate, participate in a forensic interview, receive counseling, or simply spend time in a space where they know they are not in trouble.

Behind this door, children are given a voice.
Behind this door, families find support.
Behind this door, professionals come together to seek justice.
And behind this door, childhoods matter.

Over the next several weeks, we’ll be taking you Behind Our Doors to introduce you to the spaces that make our work possible—even if you may never have a reason to walk through them yourself. 💙

Long before children enter a classroom, they are learning from the adults they trust most. That’s why conversations about body safety should start at home and happen often.

Follow these 5 Body Safety Questions to help keep the conversation going:

1. “Is anyone making you feel uncomfortable with your body?”
Teach your child that it’s okay to speak up when something doesn’t feel right.

2. “Have you seen or heard anything that made you feel upset or scared?”
Remind them they can always tell you what happened — even if someone told them to keep it a secret.

3. “Is there a grown-up you trust if you ever feel uncomfortable?”
Help your child identify safe adults they can go to for help.

4. “Do you know the difference between a safe touch and an unsafe touch?”
Talk openly about body boundaries and remind them that they have the right to say no.

5. “Do you feel like you can talk to me about anything, no matter what?”
Make sure your child knows: You will listen. You will believe them. They are not in trouble.

You don’t have to have the perfect conversation. You just have to start it.

Because you are your child’s first teacher — and body safety is a lesson worth teaching. 💙

We are currently in need of $10–$25 restaurant and fast-food gift cards to help provide meals for child abuse victims receiving services at our Center and the non-offending caregivers and family members who accompany them.

When a child comes through our doors, their day may have been turned upside down.

A child may be picked up from school before having lunch. A forensic interview, counseling appointment, or other service may extend into a mealtime. A parent or caregiver may be overwhelmed by the shock and secondary trauma of learning that their child may have been abused—and suddenly figuring out lunch or dinner for the family becomes one more thing to manage.

That’s where these gift cards help.

They give our staff a simple way to meet an immediate need for the victim and the family members supporting that child during their time at the CAC.

Sometimes it’s lunch for a child who missed their school meal. Sometimes it’s dinner for a family whose entire day has been disrupted by circumstances they never expected to face.

It’s more than a meal.

It’s one small way we can say, “Let us take care of this one thing while you focus on your child.”

🔮 WANT TO HELP???🔮

Gift cards to local restaurants and fast-food locations can be dropped off at the Children’s Advocacy Center of Cherokee County:

Monday–Thursday | 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
Friday | 8:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.

Your gift helps us care for child victims—and the families standing beside them—during some of their most difficult days

Prevention is back on the move!

After a long summer, we are finally back in the classrooms—and we are SO excited!

This week, 372 students at Spring Garden School received prevention education focused on important skills that help keep children safe. We talked about having healthy boundaries, identifying a safe adult, and using our voice to help keep our bodies safe.

What a great week of prevention! We are proud to be back in our schools, equipping children with the knowledge and confidence to recognize unsafe situations, speak up, and seek help from a trusted adult.đŸ’™đŸ„łđŸ“Ł

We’re seeing more and more in the news about online grooming, exploitation, and the dangers children can face behind a screen.

Maybe you’ve already put protective factors in place.
Maybe you have parental controls turned on.
Maybe you’ve talked to your child about online safety.
Maybe you feel confident that your child would tell you if something was wrong.

But ask yourself today:

What have I actually done to check in on my child’s online world?
❓Who are they talking to?
❓What apps are they using?
❓Who is following them?
❓Who are they following?
❓What games are they playing?
❓Are they receiving messages from people they don’t know?
❓Do they know what grooming can look like?

Grooming can happen quickly. It can begin with what looks like friendship, attention, compliments, gifts, shared interests, or someone simply making a child feel understood.

Protective factors aren't a one-time conversation or a setting you turn on and forget.

They require ongoing conversations, supervision, boundaries, and connection.

You don't have to know everything about technology.
You just have to be willing to enter your child's world.

Last week, we spent the day honoring brave, hardworking women—and when we think of all those words, we can’t help but think of our amazing Executive Director, Lori Harris, who was honored as the 2026 Fierce Woman of the Year for Cherokee County!📣

Serving children and families of Cherokee County for 27 years is just one of the many things that makes her so extraordinary. Lori's dedication, leadership, compassion, and unwavering commitment to the children in our community have made an incredible impact and we are so proud to call her ours.

A huge thank you to the Cherokee Chamber for this recognition and for celebrating the incredible women who make a difference throughout our region and to the Etowah Chamber for hosting such an empowering and FUN event!

To all of the amazing women who continue to serve, lead, advocate, and make our communities stronger—we see you, we appreciate you, and we are grateful for you!

Congratulations, to our very own Lori Harris, 2026 Fierce Woman of the YEAR!!đŸ’Ș🎉
