Queen Anne’s County officials are reminding residents to use caution when around feral animals and wildlife following a confirmed case of rabies involving a feral cat colony located on a farm in the area of Kling’s Lane in Church Hill.

The Queen Anne’s County Department of Health issued a public health advisory on October 16 and notified residents in the immediate area. Any trapping will be limited to the affected colony and conducted only as needed. At this time, there is no indication that the issue extends broadly into the Church Hill community.

Although the overall risk of rabies to the public remains low, we ask that residents remain vigilant, especially in areas where cases have been identified. Rabies is a deadly viral disease transmitted through a bite, scratch or the saliva of an infected animal, rabies is preventable through routine vaccination of pets and feral cats. While the public health risk is low thanks to these vaccination efforts, contact with an animal suspected of carrying rabies requires prompt medical attention.

Reported cases remain low, but the risk persists in unvaccinated feral cat colonies and wild animals. While widespread trapping of areas with no known cases is not standard practice, targeted areas of concern are investigated to prevent the spread of the disease. Additionally, any residents in areas of concern are notified directly.

Prevention is key and knowing what to do if an animal with suspected rabies is encountered remains the best defense.

This includes:

Prevention: Avoid approaching, handling, or feeding stray animals or wildlife, including raccoons, bats, and foxes. Ensure pets are up to date on rabies vaccinations and secure outdoor food sources.

Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR): If feeding a feral cat colony, ensure all cats in the community are vaccinated against rabies through local TNR programs or services.

Reporting & First Aid: Report unusual or aggressive animal behavior to Queen Anne’s County Animal Control at (410) 758-2393. If bitten or scratched, wash the area thoroughly with soap and water and seek prompt medical care.

Vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to protect pets and prevent the spread of rabies.

Queen Anne’s County Animal Services will be offering a rabies clinic during the Fur Festival this Saturday, October 24 at the 4-H Park in Centreville from 12-3PM Book your appointment online at www.heart4animals.org, select Make An Appointment, then select Vaccine and Microchip appointment to see available times. If you are bringing in Feral Cats, please leave them in a trap for the safety of our staff.

10/20/2026

The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) will visit Queen Anne’s County on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at 2 p.m. as part of its annual statewide tour to discuss the Draft FY 2027–2032 Consolidated Transportation Program (CTP) and transportation priorities affecting the county.

The presentation will be held in the County Commissioners’ Meeting Room, 107 N. Liberty Street, Centreville. The meeting is open to the public and will be livestreamed and recorded in the same manner as regular County Commissioner meetings.
Each year, MDOT visits Maryland’s counties and Baltimore City to present its draft six-year capital program, provide updates on transportation projects and receive input from local officials and the public. The Draft FY 2027–2032 CTP outlines approximately $21.9 billion in proposed statewide capital investments across Maryland’s transportation system.

For Queen Anne’s County, the draft plan identifies several projects of particular local interest. The primary construction program includes the replacement of the US 301 southbound bridge over MD 290, while proposed grade-separated intersections at US 50 and MD 213 and US 50 and MD 404 remain unfunded and MDOT plans to remove them from the plan. The plan also identifies completed and ongoing minor projects, including the MD 18 Planning and Environmental Linkages study between Castle Marina Road and MD 835 and resurfacing improvements at various locations throughout the county. Design and engineering for safety improvements at Route 301 / 405 is not listed in the CTP but will be listed in the addendum.

The US 301 bridge replacement is currently under construction. The existing bridge was built in 1967 and, while considered safe for the traveling public, is rated in fair condition and showing signs of advancing deterioration. The project is intended to replace the structure and keep the roadway safe and open to traffic.

The Baltimore Metropolitan Council’s analysis of the draft CTP also notes broader funding challenges facing local governments. Statewide Highway User Revenue capital grants to local governments are approximately $104.7 million lower in the draft plan, which could affect local paving, bridge maintenance, sidewalk and safety projects.

Following the MDOT presentation, the County Commissioners will meet with members of the Eastern Shore legislative delegation to discuss upcoming legislative matters, budget priorities, and issues in preparation for the next session of the Maryland General Assembly.

The day’s schedule will conclude with the regular Queen Anne’s County Commissioners meeting at 5:30 p.m. The evening meeting will be held at the Crumpton Volunteer Fire Department rather than the Commissioners’ Meeting Room in Centreville. The change in location is to accommodate a public hearing on the proposed Merganser Drive Improvement Special Benefit Tax Assessment. The Commissioners make an effort to hold public hearings involving local road improvements within the communities where the projects are proposed, making it more convenient for affected property owners and residents to attend and participate. The Merganser Drive hearing is one of eight public hearings scheduled for the evening.

Residents are encouraged to attend the afternoon presentations or watch the livestream to learn more about proposed state transportation investments and upcoming legislative priorities affecting Queen Anne’s County.

More information about Maryland’s Draft FY 2027–2032 Consolidated Transportation Program is available through MDOT’s Consolidated Transportation Program page.

10/20/2026

The Queen Anne’s County Commissioners approved a letter to Maryland Gov. Wes Moore requesting state funding for permanent safety improvements at the intersection of U.S. Route 301 and MD 405 as part of the state's fiscal year 2028 budget.
The intersection has been a longstanding safety concern for county officials and residents. Traffic volumes along U.S. Route 301 have increased by approximately 30%, contributing to growing concerns about the safety of motorists traveling through the area.

According to data provided by the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA), 66 crashes occurred at the intersection over a 5½-year period. In July 2025, two fatal crashes occurred within just three days, prompting SHA to temporarily close the MD 405 crossover.

Although temporary safety improvements have since been implemented and the crossover has reopened, county officials continue to advocate for a permanent solution to reduce the risk of future crashes.

The proposed long-term improvements include construction of a J-turn and partial closure of the existing crossover. These changes are intended to improve traffic flow and reduce dangerous crossing movements at the intersection.

The estimated cost of the project is between $3 million and $5 million, with an anticipated timeline of three to four years once funding is available.

Through this request, the commissioners are urging the state to prioritize funding for a permanent solution that will improve safety for residents, commuters and visitors traveling along this corridor.
The letter also requests continued state funding commitments for the planned replacement of the Queen Anne’s County Detention Center, which would be constructed at the former Eastern Pre-Release Unit property in Church Hill.
