Here's a sampling of what's happening at this library this week: Come out for Storytime Down on the Farm or learn about fire safety and tarot (but not on the same night!) It's also the week of the ever-popular Book or Treat for any youth, ages 0-18, to select a book treat! Check out our full lineup at https://trpld.org/events

A peek into the past with Three Rivers Library!
The brand new Three Rivers Public Library District building was completed on schedule! This state of the art building, with the original address of 210 Channon Dr, opened to the public in March of 1981. The first Summer Reading Program in the new location was themed "Pirates Reading Club", kicking off with an ice cream party on June 27. The summer program featured films, costumes, a treasure hunt, puppet shows and more!
An open house was scheduled for the official grand opening. If you look closely in the photo, you can see the yellow sign on the left side, under the Library name sign, advertising the open house from 2-5pm. Cub Scout pack #464 raised the flag, followed by short speeches from Village of Channahon Mayor, Steve Rittof, Library Trustee Kenneth Eger representing the Village of Minooka, and Library Board President James Satorius.
The public was invited inside after to tour the building and enjoy music from Merron Seron & the Will County Line. Dimples the Clown would entertain the children and make balloon animals. Raymond Shingler provided a display of old telephones in the meeting room (currently the teen room!) and Gerd Kirsch had a collection of Bonsai trees in the glass display case.
Library staff at the time included Head Librarian Erik Blomstedt, Adult Services Eve Larson, Children's Services Kay Betzwiser, Clerk Nancy Anderson, and Dana Wilke & Don McKinney as Pages.
Do you remember taking part in the Pirates Reading Club, coming to the open house, or visiting the new library when it opened?

In 2025, the American Library Association documented 487 attempts to censor books at libraries, schools, and universities. The "reasons" most commonly cited for censorship were false claims of illegal obscenity for minors; inclusion of LGBTQIA+ representation; covering topics of race, racism, social justice, and diversity; and presenting political or religious views with which the challengers disagreed. Of the 4,235 unique titles that were challenged or banned in 2025, here are the top 11 most frequently targeted. Celebrate Banned Books Week with us! Stop by to check out our displays and take home one of these titles to judge for yourself.
