For Children's Sake

Directions Website

For Children's Sake For Children's Sake is a child placing agency providing therapeutic foster care and adoption services to children ages birth to 21 years old.

Our mission is to find permanent homes for children through foster care, independent living arrangements or assistance with the adoption of children who may become eligible for adoption while in our care. We are asking you for help in realizing our mission. For Children's Sake is always looking for nurturing families to receive professional foster parent training and open their homes to Virginia's children in need of foster care and adoption.

Maybe fostering has been on your mind for a while. You read the posts, imagine what it could look like for your family, and then the questions creep in.

Those questions deserve honest answers. It’s okay to talk about the attachment, the hard days, and whether you have the support you’d need. This is a big decision, and you’re allowed to take your time.

If any of these slides sound like something you’ve said, we’d love to hear from you. You don’t have to arrive with your mind made up. 💜

Send us a message, or share this with someone who’s been thinking about fostering.

We talk a lot about what children need while they’re in foster care. But what happens when they grow up and still need someone in their corner?

A church in Chattanooga looked at a space it wasn’t using and saw an opportunity to help. Working with a local nonprofit, the congregation turned it into four furnished apartments where young adults leaving foster care can live without worrying about rent or utilities. Members even helped fill the apartments with things like sheets, towels and cleaning supplies.

What we love about this story is how practical the support is. A place to sleep. A way to do laundry. A little breathing room to figure out your next steps without having to figure out everything at once.

We’re glad Episcopal News Service shared this story, and we encourage you to read the full article at the link below. It’s a lovely example of a community making use of what it already has to meet a need. 💙

They signed up to make a difference. Then the marketing team showed up with a camera. 😂🎥

Always grateful for a team that cares deeply and humors us along the way!

“Can I adopt the child I foster?”

Sometimes. But when a child enters foster care, adoption may not be their plan at all.

That child may have parents working toward bringing them home. They may have relatives who can care for them. Being in foster care does not automatically mean their parents have lost their parental rights or that they are available for adoption.

Foster care provides a safe place to live while decisions about a child’s future are being made. When returning home can be done safely, the goal is reunification. Foster parents care for the child while supporting that plan, including family visits and maintaining important relationships.

Adoption is a permanent legal commitment. It establishes the adoptive parents as the child’s legal parents. Before a child can be adopted from foster care, they must be legally eligible, which generally means their birth parents’ parental rights have been terminated or voluntarily relinquished.

So yes, some foster parents eventually adopt. But more often the goal is to help a child return home or transition into a relative’s care. Accepting a foster placement means understanding that you cannot choose or guarantee the outcome.

This is why “I want to foster” and “I want to adopt” are different conversations to have with an agency.

If your goal is adoption, ask about children who are already legally eligible and waiting for an adoptive family. If your goal is fostering, understand that you may be caring for a child whose plan is to return home.

And for a child whose plan is safe reunification, going home is the intended outcome, even when saying goodbye is difficult for the foster family.

Thinking about starting therapy can bring up a lot of questions. You might know exactly what you want to work through, or you might just know that something has felt hard lately. Either way, you don’t need to have the right words or a plan before reaching out.

Therapy can be a space to feel heard, make sense of what you’re experiencing, and work toward the changes you want in your life. If you’re curious about getting started, we’re happy to answer your questions and help you figure out the next step 💙

The work we do is fueled by purpose, passion, and apparently kids’ sports, vacations, spoiled pets, and a serious Starbucks habit. 😂 Whatever keeps us going, we’re grateful to have a team that shows up every day for children and families. 💙

A little staff appreciation + a whole lot of team bonding 🤍

Our team spends every day showing up for children, families, and one another, so taking a day to slow down, have some fun, and celebrate the people behind the work was so special.

Kelley surprised our staff with the sweetest appreciation day, starting with brunch at Milk & Honey, putting our teamwork to the test in an escape room, and ending the day the best way possible… with ice cream! 🍦

We’re so grateful for a team that works hard, supports each other, and can have a whole lot of fun together, too. 🫶

Somehow “being at work” feels a lot less like work when you get to do it with your favorite people. 💛🥹
