Investments are being made in Claremont, not only in the business park but in the staff as well. In 2011 City Manager Doug Barrick received a scholarship to attend the Public Executive Leadership Academy (PELA) hosted by the School of Government on the Campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Police Chief Gary Bost was fortunate enough to be selected as a member of the 2013 PELA. The PELA course is an intense two week academy that challenges City Managers and Department heads to learn more about themselves as leaders as they gain insights from the other participants and nationally recognized speakers on various leadership topics. The UNC School of Government provides courses to a select group of participants from municipalities across the State of North Carolina. Mayor Morrow said, “Claremont is fortunate to have both Manager Barrick and Chief Bost to foster continued leadership and the quality of life in our community.” Furthermore PELA is designed to help participants develop plans and tools to diagnose problems and create solutions within the community. Mayor Morrow said, “Leadership in any community is the key to its success, and we congratulate our City Manager Doug Barrick and Police Chief Gary Bost upon completing PELA. Chief Bost when asked about his experience said “The PELA Class for me was about trying to think outside the box or recognizing when someone else starts thinking outside the box to help improve upon the way of life for the citizens of Claremont.” The ability for Claremont to tap two of its leaders for this Academy will certainly provide the expert leadership needed to continue to make Claremont a vibrant City for years to come. “PELA provided me a framework to challenge the way I view my leadership and to absorb knowledge from my peers and speakers who literally wrote the books on public leadership” stated City Manager Doug Barrick. In continuance of its commitment to develop their employees the City of Claremont has engaged Dr. Dianne Little, Director of the Phillips Leadership Institute at Catawba Valley Community College. Dr. Little will provide a one day leadership seminar to the Cities management team this fall. This seminar will provide our team with the skills they need to continue to develop themselves as high caliber leaders for this community stated City Manager Barrick. The City of Claremont strives to provide excellent services to its citizens and businesses, the professional development of its staff is a critical success factor in the deployment of the everyday betterment of life for its citizens and businesses.
