Topper Tuesday Financial Facts: Annual Expenditure Overview
Chardon Schools’ annual expenditures support a variety of critical service functions throughout the district, ranging from personnel to direct classroom instruction and support as well as business affairs.
Important data points from this graphic include:
1. The district’s administrative costs (13.1%), excluding clerical staff, are 10.02%. Chardon spends roughly 2% to 3% less of its budget on administration compared to the state average.
2. The district spends 64.5% on Classroom Instruction, which is more than the state average range of 60% to 64%.
3. Chardon Schools spends more on transportation than the average Ohio school district (4% to 6%) due to higher maintenance costs, additional equipment wear, increased winter prep and low student population density per square mile which results in longer bus routes, increased fuel consumption and longer driver hours compared to suburban or urban districts.
4. Chardon Schools continues to reduce expenditures after the construction of the Business Affairs and Transportation Center in FY2025 to keep expenditure increases below the average CPI rate of 4.2% (currently at 3.37% in the last forecast).
5. Fiscal Year 2026 expenditures are less than 2024 due to annual staffing and operations review combined with cost-reduction measures.
Careful management of district expenditures allows for financial effectiveness and efficiency, ultimately working to support our students and staff and provide the best educational experience possible.
