The 8th grade Careers class had the pleasure of hosting Jacob Page, a Charles City alumni and Discretionary Grant and Earmark Engineer for the Iowa DOT. Jacob explained he helps Iowa counties and cities apply for federal grant projects for roads and bridges. He is currently managing around 150 projects across the state which accounts for $600 million in projects.

Students learned Iowa uses more concrete paving compared to other states, because we have a limestone supply which leads to projects not being as costly. Additionally, asphalt is destroyed by Iowa’s frequent free-thaw cycles; in southern and warmer states this isn’t an issue so you will see more asphalt roads. Jacob primarily works from home which intrigued some students. Thanks for sharing with us!

The 8th grade Careers class had the pleasure of hosting Jesse Decker, Justin Spies, and Rahul Seshappa, engineers at Valero Renewables in Charles City. Also tagging along was Nathan, an ISU student who is completing an engineering internship at the Charles City plant; what a neat perspective for the students to hear from!

Within Valero, these 3 engineers have very diverse roles and enjoy different facets of these. For example, Jesse enjoys solving problems with creative solutions whereas Rahul appreciates seeing his designs brought to life and installed at the plant. Students also got a close-up look at how Valero processes corn into ethanol. Thanks for sharing a career opportunity close to home!

Our first quarter of 8th grade Careers class is soon coming to a close, and students will have heard from over 20 individuals! Mrs. Rahmiller would love to provide the same experience for her next group of students in Quarter 2. She has dates available beginning November 3 - January 15. Speakers can join class in person or virtually via Zoom, and class meets daily from 8:00–8:45 a.m.

The class would also be open to touring facilities/campuses/businesses if you'd have us.

Last week Lynne Wilkens, a WOC (wound, ostomy, and continence) nurse at Floyd County Medical Center visited the 8th grade Careers class. Students learned there are several different types of nurses as well as nursing school options. Nurses need to be good listeners and communicators.

Lynne brought in different dressings used for wounds and demonstrated how they work with water. Students found it fascinating that silver and honey are frequently used! Another neat demonstration was the wound vac training model. Thanks for sharing your expertise with us in the medical field!

Ben Lynch, CCHS alumni and now attorney, spent Wednesday morning talking with 8th graders about his career path. He started out attending Hawkeye Community College and recommended this path to those who don’t know what they want to do and/or whose money may be tight. He then transferred to UNI, graduated, and went on to attend Drake Law School.

Ben owns Ben Lynch Law Office in Des Moines and enjoys his career because he loves to help others. One of the most valuable pieces of information he shared was the importance of mental health; in his field there are a wide range of emotions. Ben combats this by exercising, eating healthy, spending time with family and friends, and talking about his feelings. Thanks Ben for sharing with us!

On Friday, Dr. Scott Hansen of Central Park Dentistry stopped by the 8th grade Careers class to share his unique path of how he became a dentist. Without spoiling it for the next groups, it was a great lesson for students to see that your first choice of a career or college does not have to be the “end all”. Plans and life can lead you down other paths. Dr. Hansen’s career has allowed him to help and serve others each and every day and that is one of his values. Thank you for visiting with us!
