Planning to mail your property tax payment? PLEASE DON'T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE!
The first-half property tax deadline is September 30, 2026, and the U.S. Postal Service has updated its postmarking procedures.
Mail is now postmarked when it is processed at a postal facility, which may not be the same day you place it in a mailbox. That means dropping your payment in the mail on September 30 does not necessarily guarantee a September 30 postmark.
To help avoid late fees:
• Mail your payment well in advance of the deadline, or
• Take time-sensitive mail to a staffed USPS retail location and request a free manual postmark.
Payments must be received or postmarked on or before September 30 to avoid penalties. A 1.5% late fee begins October 1.
Remember: The USPS postmark is the only date recognized as proof of mailing. The date written on your check or a business metered date cannot be accepted as proof of the mailing date.

You can easily pay online at www.iowataxandtags.org

"DON'T RISK A LATE POSTMARK! PROPERTY TAX PAYMENTS MUST BE POSTMARKED BY SEPTEMBER 30."

⚠️ PROPERTY TAX PAYMENT DEADLINE REMINDER ⚠️
You Have 15 Days Remaining to Pay Your Property Taxes
Important Dates

✅ 11 Business Days Remaining to submit payment.

✅ Approximately 8 Postal Processing Days Remaining to ensure your payment receives a timely USPS postmark.

DO NOT WAIT UNTIL SEPTEMBER 30 TO MAIL YOUR PAYMENT

Beginning with USPS processing changes, the date you place your payment in a mailbox may not be the date it receives a postmark.

A payment dropped in a collection box on September 30 may receive a later postmark date, depending on when USPS processes the mail.

We Strongly Recommend:

💻 Paying Online at www.iowataxandtags.org

📬 Mail your payment early, OR

🏤 Visit a USPS retail counter and request a hand-stamped (same-day) postmark OR

🗳 Dropping your payment off in the OLD Courthouse Entryway Locked Drop Box (available 24/7).

IMPORTANT

Tax payments postmarked AFTER September 30 will be assessed penalties as required by law.

No exceptions will be made for late USPS processing or delayed postmarks.
