It is with great sadness that Citizens Fire Company announces the passing of Lawrence “Buck” Willingham, a lifetime member, former Fire Chief, and an important part of our Company’s history.

Buck joined Citizens Fire Company in 1950, beginning a remarkable legacy of service that spanned more than seven decades. During his many years with the Company, he served in numerous capacities, including as Fire Chief from 1991 through 1994.

His decades of service are woven into the history of Citizens Fire Company. The traditions he helped carry forward, the members he served alongside, and the commitment to community that defined his service will remain part of our Company for generations to come.

We extend our deepest condolences to Buck’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing and serving alongside him.

Thank you for your service, Chief Willingham. After more than 75 years of dedication to Citizens Fire Company, your legacy will not be forgotten.

🚨 Notice to Our Community 🚨

If you've noticed a smoky smell or hazy conditions across our area today, the smoke is not from a local fire. It is the result of smoke drifting into our region from the ongoing wildfires in Canada.

We understand that these conditions can be concerning, but we ask everyone to remain aware of your surroundings before calling 9-1-1. If you see visible flames, heavy smoke coming from a specific location, or believe there is an actual fire emergency, please do not hesitate to call 9-1-1 immediately.

However, if the haze or smoke you are noticing is widespread throughout the area with no identifiable source, it is most likely related to the Canadian wildfire smoke.

Thank you for helping us keep emergency resources available for those who truly need them. As always, if you witness a fire or any other emergency, call 9-1-1 without delay.

Stay safe and have a great weekend.

Proud to support our local team and giving them a send-off worthy of their hard work and dedication. Great job girls and we look forward to many more escorts for future state tournaments.

🚔🚒 Grateful for You in Many Ways 🚒🚔

Before we left for the State Tournament, our team received a send-off that reminded us exactly what makes Jefferson County special.

In addition to your daily duties, we want to give a thank you to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department and Citizens Fire Company for escorting our team out of town and helping send our players off in style.

To everyone who lined the field, made signs, waved, cheered, and showed their support—thank you.

For a group of young women who worked all year to earn this opportunity, that moment meant more than you know and one we’ll never forget. ❤️🤍💙

The fire service is built on tradition!!!

21 years ago, Principal Christopher Walters was the victim of a vicious water balloon attack at the hands of some rouge Wright Denny Intermediate School staff/students, so he did the most logical thing possible… he contacted Citizens Fire Company and asked us to help him get revenge in the best, most fun, way we could… so we came out and SOAKED everyone on the playground!

Every year since, the staff, students, parents, and yes, all the firefighters, look forward to the last day of school, when we bring the ladder truck, engine, brush truck, tanker (anything that will spray water) and provide the best last day school tradition in the county! Let’s face it, after a long school year, they’ve all earned it!

Our small town has certainly seen a substantial amount of change in 21 years, but this is one event that has withstood the test of time!

Thank you Principal Walters for inviting us all those years ago; we expect to continue the tradition for years to come!

Our friends from Independent Fire Company, Inc. even joined in on the fun this year!

If you were a student at Wright Denny in 2005, or any year afterwards, and are reading this post today, let us know in the comments!

Chief Cepelka was a lifetime member of Citizens Fire Company. More than that, he was a leader, mentor, and someone who helped lay the foundation for the service we provide today.

A dedicated servant to the community, Chief Cepelka served in numerous leadership roles, and helped shape not only our organization, but the people within it. His influence can be seen in the traditions we carry forward, the standards we uphold, and the pride we take in serving our community. His vision and commitment ensured success for generations to come!

Chief Cepelka was someone who took the time to teach, guide, and invest in others. His knowledge, leadership, and command presence left a lasting mark that will not be forgotten.

We extend our deepest condolences to Jay’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of serving alongside him. His legacy will continue to live on in every call answered, every lesson passed down, and every member who follows in his footsteps.
