CofC MFA Creative Writing Program writers Ebony Watson, Anjali Chanda, Melissa Hughes, and Jackson Casey visited Professor Anthony Varallo’s ENGL 190 Living Writers course today, reading their stories and poems and engaging in a lively Q&A. Hooray for this fantastic connection between undergraduate and graduate students!

Next week, on October 22, swing by the MFA Free Zine Fair in Cougar Mall, between 11 AM-1 PM, to pick up original poems and flash fictions from CofC MFA Creative Writing Program students. Then drop into Writing Club at the Halsey that same evening, from 5:30-7 PM, to write in the galleries with generative prompts designed by CofC MFA Creative Writing Program students, inspired by the art in GROUNDED IN GRAIN, WASHED IN THE WATER.

Last week, CofC MFA Creative Writing Program writer Madelyn Stepski held a generative writing workshop with Burke High School juniors, kicking off a new partnership between Charleston Literary Festival and CofC’s MFA Program in Creative Writing. We’re so grateful to Sara Peck, Director of Next Generation Initiatives at Charleston Literary Festival, for connecting CofC MFA Creative Writing Program students with local high school students and building bridges between writers at different stages of their careers.

Charleston Literary Festival’s Young Writers Awards are open now for high school students currently enrolled in a Charleston, Berkeley, or Dorchester County public high school. Students can submit poems, short stories, or essays, and selected young authors will receive a cash prize, appear at a Festival event, and have their writing published on the Festival’s website. The Young Writers Awards seek to elevate teen voices and promote the transformative power of literature.

More Charleston Literary Festival x CofC MFA workshops are coming soon, at Burke, Waldo, and Allegro. Thanks to madelyn🌟 for knocking it out of the park—and thanks to the CofC MFA Creative Writing Program writers on deck to visit schools this week and next!

A beautiful evening as Kangkang Kovacs returned to CofC with her debut novel, NOTHING TO MY NAME! It was especially wonderful to see many of Kangkang’s fellow CofC MFA Creative Writing Program grads in the packed house at Simons Recital Hall. As Kangkang said from the stage, it’s so important for writers to find and sustain their community.

We’re very grateful to Kangkang for sharing her stunning work and for responding so generously to the audience’s thoughtful questions. Huge thanks to Tony Varallo, Anjali Chanda, Jonathan Bohr Heinen, swamp pink literary journal, and Charleston Literary Festival for making this special night possible.

On September 24, Kangkang Kovacs will headline the first swamp pink literary journal reading of the year, an event co-sponsored by Charleston Literary Festival and the College of Charleston MFA Program in Creative Writing.
