🌱 A new community space is taking shape on Charleston’s West Side through Mayor Goodwin’s Hearts of Our Neighborhood initiative!

Led by Mear Mae’s Meadow, The Matriarch’s Heart project is creating a space for urban agriculture, education, and neighborhood connection. Today, we got to see the newly delivered building and how local community members, including Girl Scouts, are helping plant and work on the space.

The project includes an agricultural workspace at Heritage House and a gardening space at the Alive Triggs Living Legacy Garden, where neighbors can grow fresh produce, share knowledge, and connect across generations.

Thank you to Mear Mae’s Meadow and its partners, Keep Your Faith Corp., New Economy Works WV, Black Gardeners & Growers of WV, Acts of Kindness – Charleston, and WVU Extension Service, for helping bring this vision to life. 🌱

Mayor Goodwin swore in Jason Webb as Charleston's new Chief of Police for the Charleston, WV Police Department.

Chief Webb brings more than 19 years of service with the Charleston Police Department to his new role. Since February 2024, he has served as Deputy Chief of Police, following assignments in patrol, investigations, specialized units, and departmental leadership.

As Chief Scott Dempsey retires following more than two decades of service, we also extend our appreciation for his leadership and commitment to our Capital City. Mayor Goodwin presented Dempsey with a Key to the City today in recognition of his years of service to Charleston.

Congratulations to Chief Webb as he takes on his new role, and best wishes to Chief Dempsey in his retirement!

🏗️ Municipal Government Week | Day 4: Building Charleston's Future

Ever wondered what happens before construction begins on a City project?

From identifying a need and developing plans to securing funding, bidding the project, and obtaining necessary approvals, there's a lot of work that happens before the first shovel hits the ground.

Behind that work are employees with different areas of expertise—engineers, planners, project managers, and crews who help move projects through planning, construction, and ongoing maintenance.

Today, we're taking a closer look at the steps involved in moving City projects from an idea to an improvement in our community.

🌙 Municipal Government Week | Day 3: More Than a 9 to 5

City services don't stop when the workday ends.

From police officers and firefighters responding to emergencies around the clock to Public Works crews clearing snow-covered streets and addressing unexpected conditions, City employees are often working nights, weekends, and holidays.

And when situations require more than one department, City teams work together to address immediate needs and help keep residents safe.
Today, we're highlighting some of the people and work that help keep Charleston running beyond regular business hours.

➡️ Swipe through for a closer look at the work happening beyond regular business hours.
