On this day 71 years ago, the 130th Troop Carrier Squadron received federal recognition at Kanawha Airport in Charleston, West Virginia. Although publicly designated as a troop carrier squadron, the unit was assigned to the Air Force’s Air Resupply and Communications mission. Air Resupply and Communications units were organized to provide specialized airlift capabilities in support of unconventional warfare, psychological operations and other contingency missions directed by the Air Force. Because of the sensitive nature of these responsibilities, many details of the unit’s wartime mission remained classified during its early years. The unit has had many name changes, in 1960 it was renamed the 130th Air Commando Group, later it was named the 130th Special Operations Group, in 1975 it became the 130th Tactical Airlift Group and in 1992, it became the 130th Airlift Group. On October 1, 1995, the unit officially became the 130th Airlift Wing.

The unit has many achievements, such as, the first Air National Guard flying unit to deploy outside if the continental United States, first flying unit to participate in Exercise Bright Star, a multinational exercise conducted in Egypt, and represented the Air National Guard during ceremonies commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Allied invasion of Normandy.

As September comes to a close, the 130th Airlift Wing has had a busy year. From the return of our Airmen after the wing’s first C-130J deployment to the Dutch Ruck March and September Super Drill, fitness, readiness, lethality and giving back to our community have remained central to who we are and what we do. We are proud to represent the state of West Virginia and our nation!

Congratulations

Airmen assigned to the 130th Medical Group participated in a Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) night exercise at Camp Branch, West Virginia, September 18, 2026.

The training evaluated the team's ability to maintain 360-degree security and organize casualty movement from an austere, contested landing zone under darkness replicating high-stress, large-scale combat operations.

To prepare for the future fight, over drill weekend the 130th Airlift Wing, executed split-site operations during Operation Northern Vigilance, Sept. 14-20.

The full-scale readiness exercise tested the wing’s ability to employ Agile Combat Employment (ACE) concepts by operating a forward-deployed element here in Michigan while maintaining command and control (C2) from the Wing Operations Center in Charleston.

Airmen from the 130th Airlift Wing joined U.S. Army National Guard Soldiers from C Co., 1-169th General Support Aviation Battalion, and B Co., 3-126th Aviation Regiment for a Tactical Combat Casualty Care joint exercise Sept. 18, 2026, at McLaughlin Air National Guard Base in Charleston, West Virginia.

The training tested the teams’ ability to maintain 360-degree security, move casualties under simulated combat conditions and conduct critical casualty extractions using CH-47 Chinook and HH-60 Black Hawk helicopters.

Joint training like this strengthens interoperability, builds readiness and ensures our Airmen and Soldiers are prepared to respond when every second counts.
