For individuals with recurring medical expenses, especially mobility equipment users, people relying on personal care support, and households building budgets around assistive technology and specialized transportation, the hardest part is that costs keep returning even when income doesn’t.

The core tension is simple: essentials like appointments, supplies, repairs, and rides compete with rent, groceries, and every other bill, and the “extra” money to catch up often never appears. That strain can make managing healthcare-related finances feel reactive and exhausting, with decisions forced by timing instead of priorities.

With a clearer view of how care costs shape cash flow and goals, control starts to come back.

Today is National Stop Bullying Day which aims to bring together students, faculty, and parents to end bullying. This annual awareness day promotes standing up against and put an end to bullying.

No child should be afraid to ride a bus or go to school because a classmate threatens them. Children who have been bullied should also feel they can report the incident without repercussions. However, many times it goes unreported because of fear and embarrassment. We need to normalize what bullying is and how we can help prevent it from happening.

World Mental Health Day on October 10 raises annual awareness and mobilizes efforts to support mental health. The stigma for mental health issues is slowly going away. Mental health issues are finally getting the attention they deserve. Healthcare workers and individuals feel they can discuss mental health more openly. However, that doesn't mean there isn't still work to do, however.

As a whole, we often misunderstand mental health because it is hard to define. Additionally, mental health includes several areas. These areas involve one's social, emotional, and psychological well-being. Mental health affects thoughts, feelings, and actions. When we have positive mental health, we handle stress better, our productivity remains stable, and we realize our full potential.

During October, National Dwarfism Awareness Month raises positive awareness on dwarfism, aims to dispel myths and misconceptions, and offers opportunities for people with dwarfism.

An estimated 30,000 people in the United States are born with some type of dwarfism. Internationally, the number grows to 651,000. From person to person, the type of dwarfism takes on different forms. And while there are over 200 distinct forms of dwarfism and skeletal dysplasia, rarely do the conditions affect cognitive abilities.

“People with dwarfism are no different than any other person. We may just need a well-placed stool. Our members are children, college students, business professionals, doctors, engineers, mechanics, artists and teachers. We can do anything an average-height person can do.”
Lois Lamb, LPA President and a person with dwarfism.

October is Rett Syndrome Awareness Month.

Rett syndrome (RTT) is a rare and devastating neurodevelopmental disorder that impacts nearly every aspect of an individual’s life, including their ability to speak, walk, eat, and even breathe. Symptoms can begin as early as 6 months old when parents begin to see their child miss development milestones and lose abilities they had already gained.

Rett syndrome is not a degenerative disorder. Barring illness or complications, individuals with Rett can live into adulthood and beyond, but require lifelong care.

National Depression Education & Awareness Month is an annual designation observed in October. According to the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, about 14.8 million adults in the U.S. are affected by Major Depressive Disorder.

Because of this, su***de is the third leading cause of death for people ages 15-24, and those numbers are currently on the rise. Depression is very difficult for the individual suffering with it, as well as for their friends and family.

Depression makes its victims feel hopeless, distressed, worthless, and anxious, to name a few. Perhaps the most difficult part is that those who suffer from depression rarely see a light at the end of the tunnel, even if everything in their life is seemingly "going well." It's hard for others to grasp because many times, there's not an obvious problem in that person's life that would make them feel depressed. This is why it's important to get the conversation going, even if it's uncomfortable at first. It will save lives.
