Farm Fact: 1 in 6 West Virginians (many of them children and seniors) are food insecure on this . That means having limited or uncertain access to enough safe, nutritious, and affordable food. WV farmers markets and food stands are helping bridge that gap by bringing fresh produce/meats/value-added products to previously underserved areas. The state's two food banks, Mountaineer and Facing Hunger, collect and supply food to tens of thousands each month.

October is National Farm to School Month!

Farm to School connects schools and early care sites with local farmers and food producers to provide fresh, locally grown foods while teaching students about agriculture, nutrition, and healthy eating.

Join the WVDA as we celebrate our farmers who grow our food, our schools who serve it, and our educators and families who help the next generation understand where their food comes from! Share your activities, adventures and locally grown favorites in the comments below!

Have questions about Farm to School? Contact Amanda Kittel at the WV Department of Agriculture at 304-558-2210.

Fun Farm Fact: Haven't harvested your šŸ„•šŸ„•šŸ„• yet? They're getting sweeter by the day! Light frost triggers carrots to convert starches into sugars, improving their flavor. If you want to extend your crop, a thick mulch layer allows carrots to remain in the ground longer into late fall.

Fun Farm Fact: By mid‑October, cooler temperatures (below 60°F) cause honeybees to reduce foraging trips and focus on late‑blooming plants such as aster and goldenrod. They still collect nectar and pollen, but activity is more sporadic. A healthy colony will have a lower population of worker bees than summer months and an ample store of honey, which they use to survive the winter.šŸ
