Charleston Water System is a public water and wastewater utility serving the Greater Charleston area. Our clean water services protect public health and the environment, provide fire protection, and support the economy and quality of life. We're proud to be named one of the "Best Places to Work in SC" for four consecutive years, and we're a long-standing member of the Partnership for Safe Water. Charleston Water System provides clean drinking water to more than 112,000 accounts. We operate one water treatment plant and 1,800 miles of water mains. We also provide sewer service (not stormwater drainage) to 52,000 accounts. Wastewater travels through 800 miles of pipes and 12 miles of deep tunnels to our Plum Island Wastewater Treatment Plant, which cleans an average of 19 million gallons of water a day and releases it into the Charleston Harbor. Charleston Water System is committed to preventing pollution and improving the environment. We are certified under ISO 14001, the international standard for environmental management. Formally known as the Commissioners of Public Works of the City of Charleston, SC, we are an independent utility governed by an elected Board of Commissioners.

Protecting our waterways and the environment goes beyond wastewater collection and the treatment plant. For the 2026 Beach/River Sweep, volunteers at Charleston Water System teamed up with Black & Veatch to pick up litter along Harbor View Road on James Island and removed over 25 bags of trash and other large debris from our marshes and roadways. Thank you to South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and S.C. Sea Grant Consortium for holding this annual event that we are proud to have participated for nearly 20 years.

Small actions add up, and every bag of litter collected is a step towards protecting the environment and natural beauty of the place we love to call home.
