🚒🔥 Rain or shine, our community showed up!

A big THANK YOU to everyone who joined us this past Saturday for JIPSD’s Annual Fire Prevention & Community Services Expo! 🚒🚓🚑

Although Mother Nature had other plans and we had to wrap things up a little earlier than expected, we were thrilled with the turnout and grateful for the opportunity to connect with so many members of our community!

A special thank you to Lowe’s, all of our community partners, participating local agencies, and staff who helped make this event possible. Your support plays a huge role in making this event a success year after year!

We appreciate everyone who came out despite the weather and look forward to seeing you again next year! ❤️

🔥🔋 That’s a wrap on Fire Prevention Week — but fire prevention doesn’t end here!

A big thank you to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) for providing helpful tips throughout the week to help us all Charge Into Fire Safety™ and make safer choices when using lithium-ion batteries.

Here’s a quick recap of your charging superpowers:

🔌 Cheap Charger? Don’t Chance It. Use the charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.

🛋️ Soft Surface? Hard Pass. Charge devices on a hard, flat surface to prevent heat from becoming trapped.

🌡️ Feels Hot? Stop Using It. Heat, strange smells, popping sounds, changes in shape or color, and smoke can all be warning signs of a damaged battery.

⚡ Fully Charged? Time to Unplug. Once your device reaches a full charge, unplug it.

🛴 For Tools and Rides, Charge Outside. When possible, charge e-bikes, scooters, power tools, and other large battery-powered items outdoors and never block an exit.

✈️ On a Flight? Keep It in Sight. Keep portable charging devices visible while charging so flight crews can respond quickly if something goes wrong.

🚒 And we’re not done yet! Join us for JIPSD’s Fire Prevention & Community Services Expo this Saturday, October 17, from 11 AM–1 PM in the Lowe's parking lot on Daniel Ellis Dr., where we’ll continue the conversation about this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme and share more ways to keep your home and family fire safe.

Thank you to the NFPA and Sparky The Fire Dog for helping communities stay informed and fire safe. Learn more at fpw.org.

✈️🔋 Flying? Practice safe charging in the air, too!

When charging on a plane, keep portable charging devices on your tray table where they can be seen. Never charge devices in overhead compartments, and never charge e-cigarettes or vapes on a plane. If a battery overheats or fails, keeping it visible allows the flight crew to respond quickly.

🚲🔋 Big batteries call for extra care!

When possible, charge larger items like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside. And ALWAYS make sure charging devices aren’t blocking an exit. These batteries store more energy, which means a fire can grow quickly if a battery fails.

Charge smart and keep your way out clear! Visit fpw.org and follow Sparky The Fire Dog to learn more.

🔌 Fully charged? Time to unplug!

Once your device reaches a full charge, unplug it. Leaving a device plugged in longer than necessary can increase heat and put additional stress on the battery. It’s a small habit that can help you charge more safely.

Please keep an eye on the weather this weekend, and stay prepared!

Widespread rainfall is expected to develop Friday night into early Saturday, with highest amounts on Saturday, though rainfall will likely persist into Sunday. New moon phases will bring elevated astronomical tides this weekend. Heavy rainfall occurring during high tides may lead to rapid coastal flooding, including in Savannah and Charleston.

⚠️ Know the warning signs of a damaged battery.

Stop using your device right away if the battery smells strange, feels warm to the touch, makes popping noises, changes shape or color, or starts smoking. If it’s safe to do so, move the device away from anything that can catch fire.

Damaged batteries can overheat and start a fire, so don’t ignore the warning signs. Visit fpw.org and follow Sparky The Fire Dog to learn more.
