🚲🔋 Big batteries call for extra care!

When possible, charge larger items like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside. And ALWAYS make sure charging devices aren’t blocking an exit. These batteries store more energy, which means a fire can grow quickly if a battery fails.

Charge smart and keep your way out clear! Visit fpw.org and follow Sparky The Fire Dog to learn more.

🔌 Fully charged? Time to unplug!

Once your device reaches a full charge, unplug it. Leaving a device plugged in longer than necessary can increase heat and put additional stress on the battery. It’s a small habit that can help you charge more safely.

Visit fpw.org and follow Sparky The Fire Dog to learn more.

⚠️ Know the warning signs of a damaged battery.

Stop using your device right away if the battery smells strange, feels warm to the touch, makes popping noises, changes shape or color, or starts smoking. If it’s safe to do so, move the device away from anything that can catch fire.

Damaged batteries can overheat and start a fire, so don’t ignore the warning signs. Visit fpw.org and follow Sparky The Fire Dog to learn more.

The men and women of the James Island PSD Fire Department are saddened to hear of the passing of Battalion Chief Chastity Bigney today, who fought her battle with cancer to the bitter end. Our thoughts go out to her husband, family, friends and colleagues tonight. Rest easy ma'am, we have the watch from here.

🔋 Where you charge matters!

Always charge devices on a hard, flat surface like a table, desk, or floor. Beds, couches, and pillows may be convenient, but they can trap heat and block airflow, causing a battery to overheat.

Keep it cool, flat, and safe while you charge! Visit fpw.org and follow Sparky The Fire Dog to learn more.

🔥 It’s Fire Prevention Week! 🔋⚡

October 4–10, the JIPSD Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and Sparky The Fire Dog to promote this year’s Fire Prevention Week™ theme: “Charge Into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.”

Lithium-ion batteries power so many of the devices we use every day, and the choices we make when charging them matter. Help prevent lithium-ion battery fires by using your charging superpower and making smart, safe choices every time you plug in. 🔌🦸

Today we remember. We remember where we were when we first heard. We remember the feelings of uncertainty. We remember the horrible events we witnessed. We remember the destruction.

We remember the 343 FDNY firefighters who gave their lives saving others. We remember the 71 law enforcement members who lost their lives. We remember the 55 military members who died at the Pentagon. And we remember the 2977 civilians who's lives were cut short that day.

We remember the emptiness of the aftermath. And yet we remember the days and weeks after. We remember how the nation, and even the world came together to heal. We remember the strong bonds of brotherhood that bloomed from the chaos.

We remember so that we never forget....

As part of the State's Firefighter Mobilization plan, members of the JIPSD Fire Department's Engine 802 assisted Fairfield County with the Winnsboro fire at the MyLily mattress factory. The fire has been a total loss, and crews were sent to assist in containment and extinguishment operations.

This plan helps provide critical resources for incidents that overwhelm the local agencies.
