The Craik-Patton House The Craik-Patton House tells the story of two historic families that lived in the Kanawha Valley

The Craik-Patton house seeks to preserve the house, grounds and their collected contents, “The Elms” Well House, and the Ruffner Log House as artifacts representative of the culture and history of the Kanawha River Valley and encouraging the study and advancement of history through guided tours, public programming, and heritage development. We strive to accurately depict the lives of the Craik family (1835) and the Patton family (1861) by displaying period appropriate decorative arts, furnishings, and acquisitions within the Craik-Patton house on the historic Midland Trail in Charleston WV.

Meet Jazzmin Jackson, the newest addition to the Craik-Patton team! Joining us as a Social Media Intern, Jazzmin is a 20-year-old Houston, Texas native who brings a vibrant energy and a passion for storytelling to our beloved house. She is currently a student at the University of Charleston studying Communications, with bright aspirations of becoming a news anchor and reporter in the future.

Jazzmin is no stranger to dedication and teamwork. She has been playing lacrosse for 13 years and originally attended UC on an athletic scholarship before successfully transitioning to an academic scholarship this year! When she isn't busy crafting engaging content or learning new things for the museum, Jazzmin loves to read, hike, paint, and work out. Back home in Texas, she is supported by her three brothers—including a twin!—and her two adored German Shepherds. We are thrilled to have her on board, so please join us in giving Jazzmin a warm welcome!

Behind every page is a process, here is ours...

Conservation, preservation, and restoration are all distinct and important processes in any museum. At Craik-Patton, our museum collections staff and volunteers assess each item before deciding how best to protect it for future generations.

Here, we are using a combination of preservation and conservation in repairing these 19th century books.
1) A few books selected for minor repair.
2) In order to replace the missing spine, I needed to remove the covers and prepare them to be reattached with new book cloth.
3) Applying a wheat past glue to the spine.
5) Applying a piece of archival Bristol board over a stiff net-like fabric on the spine to allow both flexibility and stability.
7) In the process of reattaching the covers and wrapping the new book cloth around the spine.
8) The covers are reattached to a new spine cover.
9) We press the book overnight.
10) The remaining parts of the original spine are glued to the new cloth backing.

This is Scotchtown, the home of Patrick Henry from 1771 - 1778. Here is where he envisioned his most influential and revolutionary ideas including the celebrated "Liberty or Death" speech. You can see a creative interpretation of Patrick Henry, portrayed by the American Historical Theatre's Robert Gleason at our America 250 Celebration on June 27th. Link in bio.
