Plantation Number 4 (now Charlestown, NH) was the northernmost and westernmost township within the British Colonies here in North America from 1735 until 1761. Due to its location at the edge of the woods, and its townspeople, Number 4 held a distinctive position in the Colonies, and had an unusual relationship with Amerindians people of the Connecticut River Valley. Today, the Fort at No. 4 attempts to bring to life the rich heritage of the many people found at the edge of the woods. That is, the museum does not receive State or Federal support. It is a 501(c)3 non-profit as well as 509(a)2 charitable entity. LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Land acknowledgments serve an important role in raising awareness of Indigenous people and their enduring relationship as stewards of the land. In recognizing the land, we express gratitude and honor for Indigenous people, past, present, and future, who once or currently inhabit lands of this region.

The historic and reconstruction of the Fort at No. 4 is situated on the ancestral territory of the Western Abenaki people. These sites, located on the banks of the Connecticut River, have long been known to include settlements and be meeting grounds where important cultural exchanges took place. We honor and celebrate the Abenaki's long and rich history on this land.

As a non-profit organization dedicated to creating greater understanding of the multi-ethnic and multi-layered history of this area, we remember and recognize the enduring injustices rooted in colonialism and systemic oppression faced by Indigenous peoples. We are committed to sustaining meaningful relationships, to learn from and assist with the preservation of the region’s Native American prehistory, traditions, language, stories and teachings.

We gratefully acknowledge the Native Peoples on whose ancestral homelands we gather.

Saturday, October 17th was the Forts annual Harvest Dinner! A beautiful evening with over 100 people joining us for a dinner by hearthlight and candlelight, with incredible community spirit brought to the grounds.

Dinner was a mix of traditional recipes and more modern fair, featuring Colonial Fish Chowder, broiled salmon, roast beef, roasted autumn vegetables, stuffing and mashed potatoes, and George Washington’s favorite mixed mushrooms in cream. Dessert featured Marlborough Pie with a colonial favorite, Parmesan Ice Cream (trust us, it was delicious! A feature from Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello). We started the evening with a c***r tasting from Eden C***r of Vermont, Sparkling and Ice C***r, accompanied by tavern snacks throughout the two story Parker House building.

Thank you to all the volunteers who contributed time and effort, especially our Fort volunteers who make the whole season run, Carol StPierre, Kim Brooks, our musician Larry Young, and Claremont Savings Bank for their dedication to community volunteerism at this event for the third year in a row!

Look for the event on our 2027 calendar soon! It’s a must do Bucket list event!

The Fort at No 4 will be open this weekend!

We are expecting overcast days with a total of 1-3” of rain between late Saturday and Monday. Saturday should be good day! However, many of our presenters for this weekend’s Out of Time timeline do come from coastal areas where the weather will not be so gentle!

That being said, the Fort will be open, with an indoor option for each of the time periods represented. The set up will be a little different, but we welcome you to visit and explore something unique this weekend!
