A little piece of life from the Loeb family’s Big House! 🏰

This maid’s uniform dress dates back to the 1950’s and was worn at the Big House, the Loeb family’s residence located about a mile from what is now Castle Farms. While the Big House is no longer part of the Castle Farms property, it remains in the Loeb family today.

A small piece of clothing, but a fascinating connection to the people who shaped the earliest history of Castle Farms! 🏰

Did you know the crenelations along the wall in the Knights Courtyard, near the Ice House, are not original to the Castle? 🏰

The wall was raised as a safety measure because of the steep drop-off on the other side. As Castle Farms transitioned into an event venue, guest safety became an important consideration. This was especially reinforced by the Castle’s concert era, when the metal ladder rings on the outside of the silos were also removed after guests began climbing them, highlighting the importance of added safety measures throughout the property!

The wall in the Knight’s Courtyard was raised and designed to complement the Ice House, creating a safer space for guests while preserving the historic character of the property.

Look closely, and you can still see where the original top of the wall once stood! A small detail that tells the story of how Castle Farms has evolved over the years! 🏰

What a difference love and care can make! 🏰

This first photo was taken after Castle Farms had sat abandoned for 35 years, with nature slowly taking over the space. Since then, the property has had three different owners, each bringing new life and care back to the Castle.

Today, the same stone walls that once stood surrounded by overgrowth are once again part of a place filled with life, history, and memories!

A little reminder that with a little love, even a forgotten place can have a new chapter! 🏰

A little nod to the dairy farm that once called Castle Farms home! 🐄🏰

This cow weather vane is one of those charming details around the Castle that connects us to the property’s agricultural roots. While it may no longer turn with the wind as it once could have, today it add a playful touch to the gardens—and serves as a fitting reminder that before there was a tourist destination, there was a dairy farm.

A little book, a unique table and chair set, and a cozy place to settle in as the temperature drops! 🍂

There’s something special about finding a quiet corner inside the Castle during the colder fall months; surrounded by historic details, beautiful craftsmanship, and a table and chair set with a character all its own. The perfect spot to sit for awhile and enjoy the season from inside the Castle! 🍂🏰

Some pieces of Castle Farms’ history came from a place you might not expect—the bottom of the lakes! 🌊

John VanHaver (the second owner of Castle Farms from 1962-1969) was an avid diver who explored both Lake Charlevoix and Lake Michigan, where he recovered pieces of shipwrecked wood and old chains from beneath the water. He later gave these salvaged materials a new life, transforming them into unique pieces of furniture that he displayed at Castle VanHaver.

And one of those pieces is still here today! This table sits in the Carriage Hall of the Knights Castle!

Today, diving for and removing materials from shipwrecks is heavily regulated and requires special permits, making this table an even more fascinating piece of Castle history. It’s more than just a piece of furniture; it’s a reminder of a time when John’s love of diving, craftsmanship, and history came together in an unexpected way! ⚓️🏰
