The crew of the West Mecklenburg Fire Department had a busy Tuesday, responding to a wide variety of emergencies throughout the day and into the night.
Earlier in the shift, crews handled several routine but important calls, including medical emergencies, a fire alarm, an outside fire, and a motor vehicle accident on Interstate 485. As the evening progressed, the calls became more serious.
Last night around 10:00 PM, West Mecklenburg and Steele Creek Fire Departments responded to a severe motor vehicle accident on Interstate 485 at West Boulevard involving an ejection. The vehicle left the roadway, struck a tree, and overturned. The patient sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital.
Just a few hours later, West Mecklenburg and Charlotte Fire Department were dispatched to another serious accident on I-485 at Moores Chapel Road, where a vehicle struck the rear of a tractor-trailer that was parked off the roadway due to a mechanical issue. The impact resulted in a vehicle fire with a person trapped inside.
A police officer with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department arrived first on scene and acted quickly, pulling the patient from the burning vehicle before firefighters arrived. The patient was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, with firefighters from West Mecklenburg riding in to continue patient care.
Then this morning, crews also responded to a reported gunshot wound. Despite extensive lifesaving efforts by first responders, the individual tragically succumbed to their injuries.
These incidents serve as a reminder of the unpredictable and often challenging situations first responders face every day. They also highlight the importance of teamwork among fire departments, law enforcement, and EMS partners who work together to protect and serve our community.
Our hearts and prayers go out to all of the individuals and families affected by these incidents.

Brendan Montesi has spent the last several weeks designing and building this custom assignment board for the firehouse and it turned out top notch.
Modeled after interstate signage, the board pays tribute to the roads we run every day, both I-85 and I-485.
This board will track both daylight and night tour personnel as we operate on 12-hour shifts, while also keeping a running record of working fires, pin-ins, and auto fires.
Proud of the work and attention to detail that went into this. Another solid addition to the firehouse on Sam Wilson Road.

Earlier today, crews from West Mecklenburg Fire Department and Belmont Fire Department responded to a tractor-trailer fire on North Bound Interstate 85 near the Gaston–Mecklenburg County line. Squad 2 arrived to find the rear of the tractor involved in fire and quickly deployed hose lines to bring the blaze under control. Thanks to a rapid response and strong teamwork between departments, the fire was contained before spreading further.
Incidents like this present unique challenges due to traffic hazards, fuel loads, and the potential for rapid fire spread.
We appreciate the teamwork with Belmont Fire Department and the support of our public safety partners who helped manage traffic and keep the scene safe.
Reminder: When approaching emergency scenes, slow down and move over to help protect the men and women working on the roadway.
