We couldn't close out without recognizing the founding mothers of Loaves & Fishes and Friendship Trays - Virginia Sampson and Ann Elliot. In 1975 and 1976 respectively, each of these women saw a need in our community and promptly went to work to solve it - by providing access to healthy food- whether groceries or meals. Their work started small, with a group of friends and churches pitching in to help. Six meals delivered in one neighborhood gave birth to Friendship Trays. Handing out groceries from a small pantry at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church gave birth to Loaves & Fishes. Today, these two organizations are one, working together to provide groceries, meals and hope to nearly 100,000 individuals throughout Mecklenburg Co. Thank you Ann and Virginia, we are so grateful for your legacy of love and hope.

You can help fight the loneliness, isolation and hunger of our senior neighbors. As the primary Meals on Wheels program in Mecklenburg Co., Loaves & Fishes/Friendship Trays delivers nutritious meals every weekday to those unable to prepare a meal for themselves. But rising food prices have resulted in a 7% increase in the cost of providing these meals. Your donation will provide meals for more seniors, allowing them to be where they want to be...at home. When the pandemic forced our volunteers to stay home, officers from CMPD Metro and South Division came to our rescue. For the last two years they have been delivering Friendship Trays meals to our senior neighbors, making sure no one went hungry.
Officers shared how much they enjoy serving their own community, having the chance to meet people they wouldn’t have before and making people smile!

50 years ago today, President Nixon signed into law a measure that amended the Older Americans Act by establishing a national nutrition program for seniors. Today, Meals on Wheels programs such as Loaves & Fishes/Friendship Trays deliver healthy, nutritious meals to seniors at risk of hunger and isolation. But it's so much more than a meal - friendly, smiling volunteers delivering human connection, allowing our senior neighbors to be where they want to be...at home. Our friends from Subaru South Boulevard are helping us celebrate March for Meals month by delivering meals to our senior neighbors! Their team started with a quick tour of our warehouse before heading out on their deliveries. Thank you Team Subaru South Blvd!
With the recent rise in food costs, we have seen a 7% increase in the cost of providing 400 meals each weekday. You can help! During March for Meals month, your donations will help provide meals to our seniors. Click here to donate: https://bit.ly/3JkRAO3
