Happy Earth Day y’all! 🌎

North Carolina’s beauty is our legacy, but it’s not guaranteed. We must work together to ensure clean air and water, investments in clean energy jobs, and protection from polluters for future generations.

This week, Governor Josh Stein joined Senator Natalie for NC Senate, the Legislative Black Caucus, and the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services to recognize Black Maternal Health Week and raise awareness of ongoing disparities in maternal and infant health outcomes. Black women are nearly twice as likely as white women to die from pregnancy complications in North Carolina. We cannot accept these disparities as a fact of life, so we must take action to ensure that all mothers and their babies receive the health care they need.

Governor Stein is committed to expanding access to care for mothers and their families. Last month, Governor Stein called on the General Assembly to pass a $1.4 billion Critical Needs Budget that addresses North Carolina’s most urgent needs while lawmakers continue to work on a comprehensive state budget. The budget includes $319 million to fully fund Medicaid, which covers half of all births across North Carolina and supports OB/GYNs, midwives, pediatricians, and behavioral health professionals who provide essential care for mothers and infants.

FOMO is real… and so is showing up.

We were out at the FOMO Museum Block Party connecting with folks to make sure no one has to miss out on what’s happening right here in Mecklenburg County, from the campaigns shaping our community to ways to get involved.

Thank you to Rep. Jordan Lopez for stopping by to keep people locked in, and to all of our volunteers who helped make it happen.

If you missed us, don’t worry. Check out our volunteer opportunities: https://www.meckdems.org/take-action/volunteer

Even as Women’s History Month comes to a close, we’re continuing to spotlight women in leadership across Mecklenburg County and beyond. Today’s conversation features Elaine Marshall, North Carolina’s Secretary of State.

This series doesn’t end here. It will continue as part of our ongoing work to highlight the leading ladies shaping our community.

What happens when more women are at the table?

Jennifer Roberts points to what we’ve already seen in the data and in practice when women are part of decision-making, priorities shift. More attention goes to education, healthcare, the environment, and the systems that support families.

It’s not abstract. It shows up in what gets funded, what gets addressed, and what actually moves forward.

That’s the impact of representation.

It takes a village to raise a child.

Anna London's village was made up of teachers, her guidance counselors, and her grandmothers.

In this interview, she talks about being a young girl dealing with a lot at home, missing school, and not always feeling confident in the classroom.

But her village made sure she didn’t have to navigate any of it alone -- especially as a child.

That kind of support stays with you. In Anna’s case, it brought her right back to the classroom.

She’s now working to strengthen that same system that once held her up, making sure students have the support, structure, and care she experienced.

You can hear it in how she talks about education, and see it in the work she’s doing on the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Board of Education.

“I love listening to people. I love storytelling. And I was just like, okay, so this is basically storytelling and problem solving. And let’s bring those two things together and do it in an authentic way that feels like you’re doing that next right thing.”
- Kimberly Owens

For some of us, storytelling was never about just telling stories. It’s about making sense of what’s happening. It’s about helping people see themselves in it. It’s about connecting the dots between what people feel and what we can actually change.

And at some point, you realize that instinct to make meaning out of moments isn’t separate from the work.

It is the work.
