As we reflect on Black History Month and Black people who have sought change and equality, Assistant District Attorney Lashieka Hardin (pictured top left) says she is inspired by former Assistant District Attorney Gabrielle “Gabi” Kelly (pictured top right.) “Although our time at the Mecklenburg County DA’s Office just barely overlapped, I was inspired by Gabi’s work ethic, leadership, and kind spirit,” Hardin said. While at the DA’s Office, Kelly was known by others to be kind, resourceful, and a mentor to many all while being excellent at her job. Gabi Kelly served as a prosecutor on the Homicide, Crimes Against Persons, Property, Domestic Violence Appeals, Misdemeanor Appeals, and Misdemeanor Teams. She also served as a team supervisor for the Misdemeanor Appeals Team and as the team leader of the Habitual Felon Team. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Kelly founded the Charlotte Metropolitan Area Chapter of the National Black Prosecutors Association where Black prosecutors in Charlotte’s state and federal offices, as well as black prosecutors from across the state, came together in a time of crisis to reflect and foster community. Through Kelly’s leadership in starting the organization, ADA Hardin was recently elected and sworn-in as Vice-President of the local chapter (pictured bottom) and gets to work with other state and federal prosecutors to serve the community and help inspire others to become prosecutors.
