You might wonder why there have been no new posts for a long time. There are several reasons, but the primary one is that I, Jim Cook, who has been the person who has maintained the site, has retired from UNCC. In addition, since the site was using my UNCC email, and I didn’t get permission from the university to create the site using their email address, there has been some suggestion that it might be shut down. I will try to separate my personal Facebook account from the university, but someone else will have to maintain the program page in some way. We have a great program, and anyone interested in it should follow up with Dr. Scott, Kilmer or Case.

My Community Psychology Learning Community spent the afternoon on the low ropes course at UNCC yesterday. This is a great, immensely diverse group who is working hard to grow and develop their talents. Everyone pitched in, and got close and personal to solve problems, despite the 92 degree heat.

On April 30, what turned out to be the "saddest day in UNC Charlotte's history", there were also positive things that happened, that should be recognized. Anna Thorpe, a member of the UNCC Community Psychology Learning Community 2017-8 cohort, successfully defended her Honor's Thesis. She did a great job, assessing stress and social support among first responders. She'll be presenting a poster on her project at the SCRA Biennial Conference in Chicago in June. Congratulations, Anna. Well done!

Two of my Community Psychology Learning Community students, Ariana Hosseini and Jessica Corn, were honored in our department’s Students Of Distinction awards ceremony. It was great to see two of our outstanding students recognized for their achievements. Ariana’s parents were able to join us for the event.

Last night, Anna Thorpe, one of our star members of the 2017 Community Psychology Learning Community, was awarded one of the highest honors bestowed upon undergraduates at UNCC. She received the Derrick Griffith Servant Leader Award. What a nice honor for a very deserving student, mother, EMT, and new student entering our MA program in community psychology.

I’ve not looked into this organization beyond seeing this post, but the message has elements I’ve certainly been advocating for a long time and the connection between local and federal change is compelling.

Jim Cook attended the Night for Children's Rights, where this video was shown, and Alexus and Heather (the stars of the show) were there as well. A marvelous story about some fantastic people. The Council is one of our longstanding partners, doing great work. Many of our students have worked with them, and I've been happy to serve on the Council's Research Committee for many years.

On Jan 24 a group from last year’s Community Psychology Learning Community got together at McColl Center for Art and Innovation. As usual, the reception at McColl was great and we went to Amelie’s for desserts. A lovely time with a great group of students.

The Executive Committee of the Society for Community Research and Action met from February 6-9 in Chicago, hosted by National Louis University. While we spent most of our time working and hashing out a difficult budget, we were also hosted at the home of Fabricio Balcazar and Yolanda Suarez Balcazar on Friday for a lovely evening of relaxation and good food.
On February 1, we hosted applicants for the Community Psychology Training Program within our Health Psychology Ph.D. program. We had a group of outstanding applicants, and we are hoping to bring several of them to UNCC starting in the fall. We have hopes for the largest class ever in the Ph.D. program (3).
