FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Statement from NC House Representative Carla Cunningham Commending Law Enforcement on Thwarting Alleged New Year’s Eve Attack

“I commend the quick, coordinated, and professional efforts of the Mint Hill Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the U.S. Department of Justice in identifying and apprehending an individual allegedly planning a violent attack on New Year’s Eve in our community.

“This case highlights the vital role of vigilant local law enforcement and effective federal cooperation. The quick response by these agencies undoubtedly prevented a tragedy and saved lives.

“While this arrest provides relief, it also underscores the ongoing threats we must remain alert to. My support for our law enforcement officers and federal agents, who work tirelessly to keep us safe, remains strong. Their dedication during a time that should be a celebration deserves our deepest appreciation.

“My office remains dedicated to supporting our law enforcement partners and ensuring they have the resources necessary to keep our communities safe. I encourage the public to stay vigilant and continue reporting any suspicious activity to authorities.

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the fear this plot sought to spread, and we stand united in our commitment to oppose violence and hatred.”

On the passing of North Carolina Governor James B. “Jim” Hunt

December 18, 2025

North Carolina mourns the loss of former Governor Jim Hunt, a dedicated public servant whose visionary leadership shaped the state for generations. Governor Hunt’s steadfast dedication to public education, rural development, and working families greatly strengthened North Carolina and set a lasting standard for people-focused governance.

He collaborated with my late husband, the Honorable William “Pete” Cunningham, on the Smart Start initiative, which greatly improved the quality of childcare and the school readiness of students.

As we honor his remarkable legacy, we remember a leader whose steady leadership, moral integrity, and love for North Carolina guided our state toward a more just and hopeful future. I offer my heartfelt condolences to Governor Hunt’s family, loved ones, and everyone who had the privilege of working with him throughout his many years of service.

Like so many others, I was deeply shaken by the news of the antisemitic attack at Bondi Beach on the first night of Hanukkah. This violence is terrifying — and it serves as a painful reminder that hatred, intolerance, and antisemitism are real and increasingly dangerous both here and around the world.

To my friends, constituents, and others in the Jewish community, know that I stand with you and I am praying for the victims, the injured, and every person who is grieving right now.

In North Carolina, and especially in the Charlotte community, we must be clear: hate will not be tolerated, excused, or overlooked. As Hanukkah begins, I hold on to its message: light endures. We will face hatred with courage, compassion, and a shared dedication to protecting, uplifting, and loving one another.
