The LANIER family (like Lenoir) were originally French Huguenots. This man, NICHOLAS LANIER, became Court Musician under King James (of England & Scotland)--yes, of the King James Bible translation! This portrait was painted by the king's portrait painter. The N.C. Laniers settled on the shore of Lake Hickory.

The fateful "CROATOAN" carving.

The FIRST colony established in North Carolina by Sir Walter Raleigh disappeared mysteriously but the word "CROATOAN" was found carved on a tree. Since the colonists had already reported friction with native Americans, it has been assumed for centuries that they may have been massacred or captured by unfriendly natives.

Isn't it awful that the man who established the first colony in America (Roanoke Island) and led other expeditions afterwards was sent to the Tower of London and beheaded? He is among those ghosts said to stare from windows of the Tower even today!

Sir Walter Raleigh was an English adventurer and writer who established a colony near Roanoke Island, in present-day North Carolina. He was imprisoned in the Tower of London and eventually put to death for treason.

Sir Walter Raleigh, also spelled Ralegh, was an English landed gentleman, writer, poet, soldier, politician, courtier, spy and explorer. He was cousin to Sir Richard Grenville and younger half-brother of Sir Humphrey Gilbert. He is also well known for popularising to***co in England.
