Launched by the Knight School of Communication at Queens, Digital Charlotte is one of several school initiatives supported by a $6 million grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. These initiatives are designed to create an “informed community," a key term in a 2009 report issued by the Knight Commission on the Information Needs of Communities in a Democracy. An informed community is a place where the information ecology meets people’s personal and civic information needs.
