On a flight? Keep it in sight. ✈️

When charging on a plane, keep portable charging devices on the tray table. Do not charge devices in overhead compartments and never charge e-cigarettes or vapes on a plane. If a battery overheats or fails, it is important for the flight crew to be able to respond quickly.

For tools and rides, charge outside. 🚲

Charge large items like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside when possible. Do not block exits when charging. These batteries store more energy, and fires can grow quickly if they fail.

The Kannapolis Fire Department joins fire departments across North Carolina in mourning the loss of a Durham firefighter who died in the line of duty this morning while battling a structure fire. Two additional firefighters were injured during the incident.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the fallen firefighter’s family, friends, and fellow firefighters. We also pray for a full recovery for those injured.

We extend our deepest condolences to Fire Chief Robert Zoldos and the entire Durham Fire Department during this difficult time.

Feels hot? Stop using it. 🌡️

Stop using your device right away if the battery smells strange, is warm to the touch, makes popping noises, changes in shape or color, or if you see smoke. If it is safe, move the device away from anything that can catch fire. A damaged battery can overheat and start a fire.

The Kannapolis Fire Department held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new training tower yesterday. The four-story training tower will be located at Fire Station 1, 300 Fire House Drive. The tower will be built near the site of the department’s former training tower. The previous tower was recently demolished due to its age, safety concerns and to make room for this new larger tower.
It will provide firefighters with a dedicated facility for realistic, hands-on training and emergency response exercises. The new training site will provide firefighters with a modern location to practice critical skills, including fire suppression, search and rescue, ladder operations, firefighter survival, Mayday response, and other emergency operations. The cost of the tower is $1.5 million and is expected to be completed in 2027.

Additionally, the department is developing conceptual plans for a Legacy and Memorial Garden which will also be located at Fire Station 1 near the training facility.
The proposed garden would recognize retired and former members, both volunteer and career, who dedicated significant portions of their lives to serving Kannapolis, while also providing a place to remember those who helped build the city’s public safety services over the years.

Soft surface? Hard pass. 🛏️

Charge on a hard, flat surface like a table, desk, or floor. Beds, couches, and pillows can trap heat and block airflow, which can cause a battery to overheat.
