Motorcycle riders continue to be overrepresented in fatal traffic accidents. In 2024, there were 6,228 motorcyclists killed — 16% of all traffic fatalities. NHTSA data shows this is among the highest number of motorcyclists killed since 1975.
We urge drivers and motorcyclists to share the road and stay alert, and we're reminding motorcyclists to make themselves visible, to use DOT-compliant helmets, and to always ride sober.

We are aware of fake posts reporting a homicide in Kannapolis this evening. This is absolutely fake news.
It is disgusting and unfortunate that some people are trying to make a dollar from reporting untruths.
We hope you will continue to ignore these fake posts, unfollow these people, report these posts and rely on our official website and channels for your information.

Effective at 8 a.m. Friday, May 8, the N.C. Forest Service has lifted a ban on all open burning for Alamance, Anson, Cabarrus, Chatham, Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Gaston, Guilford, Iredell, Mecklenburg, Montgomery, Moore, Randolph, Rockingham, Rowan, Stanly, Stokes and Union counties.
The ban, which went into effect statewide March 28 due to hazardous forest fire conditions, was lifted for 81 other counties May 3.
The lifting of the state’s burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue or lift a burn ban within those 100 feet.
As of 8 a.m. Friday, May 8, burn permits are available statewide. Residents can obtain a burn permit from any authorized permitting agent or online at https://apps.ncagr.gov/burnpermits/. All burn permits granted before the statewide burn ban were canceled when the ban became effective. To legally burn, a valid permit must be obtained.
