Women United - Charlottesville Women United is a program of United Way of Greater Charlottesville. We've accomplished all this through the power of collective giving.

Through collective and strategic giving and thoughtful action, Women United empowers and uplifts organizations supporting women and/or children in the Greater Charlottesville community. Women United in Philanthropy has awarded over $640,000 in nonprofit grants since its inception in 2005. Collectively, our members have impacted thousands of women and children in our community through our support of local non-profits that provide education, advocacy, housing, medical & mental health services, and even food, for women and children in our community who need it the most. Every dollar we give is from membership of local women who want to make a difference. Help us magnify our impact in our Community! Membership is open and accepted year-round.

We're still sitting with the discussion that followed last month's screening of the Moms First documentary No Country for Mothers with Women Advancing. When we got to the topic of juggling all the moving parts of parenthood, School Board Chair for Albemarle County Public Schools Rebecca Berlin highlighted that perhaps we have a tendency to overbook ourselves in the first place.

Are we too structured, is there too much pressure, or all of the above and more? This screening sparked a much-needed conversation–locally and beyond–about what it really takes to support mothers and families and we are so proud to be a part of it.

Today, Women United members took an educational tour of Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry, one of our 2026 grantees! We had an amazing time learning about the process of intaking, storing and distributing food. Thank you so much for the tour!

It was wonderful to see firsthand the amazing work for the community that our membership helps support! Loaves & Fishes is truly a well-oiled machine that provides nourishing food with respect and dignity to our neighbors in need. They couldn’t be more deserving of our support!

Last week, Women United and Women Advancing co-hosted a screening of the Moms First documentary No Country for Mothers, which follows activist and founder Reshma Saujani as she explores the trust about motherhood. The discussion with our panelists and attendees that followed has sparked much-needed conversation, connection, and more.

Thank you to every person who joined us for the Moms First"No Country for Mothers" film screening and panel discussion we hosted this week with Women Advancing Podcast! What an incredible experience to view this documentary alongside all of you in a sold out theater at local- and women-owned Violet Crown.

We were moved by not only this incredible film but also by the thoughtful comments and questions from our panelists and guests. And of course, the proclamation from Juandiego Wade, Mayor of the City of Charlottesville, announcing the Charlottesville Commitment to Families.

We feel honored to have been a part of this event and hope to be a part of more like it in the future.

Join us for a screening of No Country for Mothers and a panel discussion on Wednesday, September 30 at 5:30pm at Violet Crown. Hosted by Women Advancing and Women United, the film looks at the lack of support for American families and the movement to change that.

Afterward, a panel of local voices will discuss what that support could look like here in Charlottesville. Open to everyone, not just parents!

Tickets are limited. Ticket price includes popcorn and a drink, and proceeds benefit Women United’s grantmaking for local women and children.

Hopecam received a 2025 Women United Grant in support of their mission to create a better quality of life for children with cancer by virtually connecting them with their classmates and peers. Earlier this year, we received an update about the impact of this grant funding.

We heard about Andre and Ali, both local children with cancer who received technology from Hopecam. Andre is a brave 5-year-old who received his very own tablet in his Get Connected bag. Ali is a brave 12-year-old whose Get Connected bag had a Chromebook and everything he needs to stay connected with his classroom.

It is truly incredible when we receive updates like this about the impact of our grantmaking efforts. Thank you to Hopecam and to Women United members, whose contributions help make more stories like this possible!

Last week, Women United members volunteered to help fill backpacks for distribution at Albemarle Foundation for Education's Back to School Bash! This was a phenomenal event where local families received backpacks filled with essential school supplies and other community resources. 🎒🍎

We had so much fun preparing backpacks and spending time giving back to our community. Thank you to all the Women United members who participated!
