Confidence is growing for an impactful storm this weekend. The greatest impact is expected to be Saturday morning/evening.

A Nor'Easter is expected to impact Cape Cod beginning Friday, Strong winds and heavy rain are expected throughout the weekend.
Forecasts have rain totals ranging from 2" to as much as 6". Coastal flooding as well as flooded roadways are expected. Avoid driving through flood water.

Gale warnings and storm watches are already in effect for waters surrounding Cape Cod. Forecasts are showing sustained winds in the upper 40 mph range with maximum wind gusts potentially reaching 60 mph for the lower and outer Cape.

Tree damage, utility disruptions and power outages are likely.

Here are some tips to prepare:
- Secure outdoor items - bring in or tie down outdoor furniture, trash cans or anything else that could be blown away by strong winds
- Charge phones, flashlights, power banks and make sure you have batteries in the case of power outages.
- Watch for flooding! Coastal areas and roadways may become flooded with the forecast rainfall. Avoid driving or walking through flooded roadways.
-Stay away from downed wires.
-Report power outages to Eversource by calling 1-800-592-2000 or by texting "OUT" to 23129.

If you feel as though you are in danger or are experiencing an emergency, dial 911.

Prepare now, stay safe, and don't wait until conditions deteriorate.

POTENTIAL GALE FORCE WINDS AND HAZARDOUS SEAS

The National Weather Service is forecasting the potential for gale-force wind gusts and hazardous seas across the southern coastal waters beginning Tuesday and continuing through the upcoming weekend.

Mariners are advised of the following:

Gale-force wind gusts exceeding 40 mph are possible, with higher probabilities over the outer southern coastal waters.

Marginal gale-force winds may begin Tuesday afternoon, with the primary period of concern expected to begin early Thursday morning and continue through the weekend.

A Gale Watch for the southern coastal waters is expected to begin Tuesday afternoon, with the potential for the watch to be extended to additional areas.

Offshore seas of 10 to 15 feet are expected by midweek, with seas potentially increasing to 15 to 20 feet by Friday.

Conditions may deteriorate rapidly, particularly in exposed waters and areas outside the protection of the harbor.

MARINERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO TAKE PRECAUTIONS IN ADVANCE

Mariners are strongly encouraged to take appropriate precautions before conditions deteriorate, including:

Removing vessels from the water where practical and appropriate.

Checking moorings, anchors, dock lines, and other securing arrangements to ensure they are properly configured and able to withstand forecasted conditions.

Adding or inspecting chafe protection and backup lines where appropriate.

Relocating vessels to protected waters or more secure locations when conditions warrant.

Securing or removing dinghies, tenders, sails, canvas, loose equipment, and other items that could become hazards during periods of strong winds.

Checking bilge pumps, batteries, and other essential equipment prior to the onset of deteriorating weather.

Avoiding unnecessary travel on exposed waters during periods of hazardous conditions.

Mariners should not wait until conditions deteriorate to secure their vessels or make necessary preparations.

Vessel operators are encouraged to continue monitoring National Weather Service forecasts, marine weather statements, Coast Guard broadcasts, and other official weather information as conditions develop.

The Harbormaster Division urges all mariners and waterfront property owners to take appropriate precautions and to plan accordingly for the possibility of strong winds, hazardous seas, and rapidly changing conditions.

Labor Day Appreciation Post!

While workers across the country take today to rest and relax, Labor Day takes on an even greater meaning for the workforce on Cape Cod, as today represents the unofficial end of summer.

June, July, and August have always been the three busiest months of the year in Chatham. This year was no exception. Call volume for this three-month stretch was the highest it has ever been, with an approximately 15% increase over the previous busiest season.

Equally important, the department required the least amount of mutual aid during this stretch than ever before, often only calling in outside help because there were no more ambulances available to respond.

There are several factors that lead to these successes, but none are more important than the pride and dedication of our staff. A huge thanks goes out to each and every member of the department for your efforts and for continuing to provide the residents and visitors of Chatham top tier service!
