🏠🚨 REAL ESTATE SCAMS: BUYER BEWARE!
As an agency, we have recently seen an uptick in real estate scams appearing online in our local area. Scammers are increasingly using popular social media platforms and online marketplaces to advertise fake homes, apartments, and rental properties. These posts may look legitimate, use stolen photographs, and even copy information from real property listings.
Before you send money or personal information, STOP and verify the property and the person offering it.
🚩 WARNING SIGNS OF A REAL ESTATE SCAM:
• The price is significantly lower than similar properties in the area.
• The person claims they are out of town, overseas, or unable to meet in person.
• You are pressured to make a payment immediately because of "high demand."
• You are asked to pay a deposit or rent before seeing the property.
• The seller or landlord refuses to meet you or allow an in-person viewing.
• You are asked to send money through gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, cash apps, or other difficult-to-recover payment methods.
• The person asks for your Social Security number, bank information, driver's license, or other sensitive information before the property has been verified.
• The listing contains spelling errors, unusual contact information, or inconsistent property details.
• The person asks you to communicate only through private messaging or a separate phone number/email address.
• The property photos or description appear to have been copied from another listing.
🛑 PROTECT YOURSELF:
✅ Search the property address online and compare it with legitimate real estate listings.
✅ Verify that the person advertising the property actually owns or is authorized to rent/sell it.
✅ Visit the property in person before paying anything whenever possible.
✅ Contact a reputable real estate agent or property management company to help verify the listing.
✅ Be cautious about sending personal documents or financial information.
✅ Never allow urgency or pressure to override your judgment.
✅ If something seems too good to be true, take the time to investigate.
Remember: A professional-looking social media post does NOT mean the property or person behind it is legitimate.
If you believe you have encountered a real estate scam, do not send additional money or information. Save screenshots, messages, payment records, and other evidence, and report the incident to law enforcement and the platform where the listing appeared.
STOP. VERIFY. PROTECT YOURSELF. 🏠🔎
