Families came together at Hixson Elementary to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with an evening full of culture, community, and fun! Organized with support from Community School Coordinator Haley Stovall, the event reflects our core value of Enhanced Learning Opportunities by giving students and families meaningful ways to explore Hispanic culture and traditions through student performances, local vendors, face painting, dancing, and games.

Good food, fall crafts, and time together!🍂

Our NNH team enjoyed a fall staff gathering filled with chili tasting, fall-themed ornament decorating, bingo, and a chance to meet our new CEO, Brandon! It was a great opportunity to step away from our day-to-day work, connect with coworkers, get to know new faces, and enjoy some fall fun together.

When students feel they belong, they thrive. This belief drives the Northside Neighborhood House Community School strategy. Across the Hixson feeder pattern, that mission is coming to life through a new student-led Deaf Education mentorship program.

Launched in September by our Community School Coordinators at Hixson elementary, middle, and high schools, the program is being led by a Hixson High student ambassador. As a Deaf Education student with a younger sister in the elementary program, she wanted to bridge our campuses and create spaces for older students to guide, inspire, and connect with younger peers.

Because Hixson is the district hub for K–12 Deaf Education, this cross-school network gives students continuous care and encouragement throughout their school journey. Over the year, mentors and mentees will collaborate on joint art projects to showcase at end-of-year school festivals, celebrating peer mentorship and raising awareness.

This effort shows how investing in full-time Community School Coordinators turns local schools into connected hubs where student voices lead the way.

Our Community School Coordinator, Gerry Davis, hosts quarterly Homework Diners at Hixson Middle School to help students catch up on missing assignments before the end of the grading period. Homework Diners offer the opportunity for families to come to the school and work directly with teachers and their student, equipping families with the skills to support and assist their student with homework help at home while also building relationships with school staff!

For more than 100 years, Northside Neighborhood House has served neighbors north of the river. Today we’re pleased to share who will lead that work next.

Brandon Hubbard-Heitz will join NNH as Chief Executive Officer in early November. He has spent over 15 years working with students, families, and community organizations with over a decade of those across Hamilton County, most recently as Chief Strategy Officer at Chattanooga 2.0. He has also partnered with NNH on early literacy, afterschool programs, and workforce development.

“Brandon believes deeply in the power of community to create meaningful change,” said Board Chair Katie Warren. “That belief resonates strongly with NNH’s place-based work to positively impact the lives of our neighbors across North Chattanooga and beyond.”
