Hey, Cheboygan: have you got plans for this week's half day? How about a family Pumpkin Painting Party!

This Friday, October 23rd, between 11:30-1:30, families are invited to the library to paint a pumpkin. Family members of all ages and abilities are welcome at this half-day event. Pumpkins and everything needed to paint them will be provided while supplies last: all you need to bring is your festive fall imagination.

There's no cost to participate in our Pumpkin Painting Party, and no registration or library card is required. You should come ready to get a little messy! Painted pumpkins may be taken home to add to your family's fall festivities. We can't wait to see everyone's creations!

Our Seed Library is in need of seeds!

Our seed library has been well received by our community, used year round for autumn planning and spring planting, summer gardens and winter indoor efforts. An increase in food insecurity has seen a corresponding increase in use, and we find ourselves in need of seeds. Can you help?

If you have any seeds, either harvested from your own plants or produce, or purchased seed packets (opened or unopened!), you can drop them off at the front desk any time we're open. Area seed library volunteer Deb Weisberger is working on keeping our seeds fresh so "please, nothing older than 2024."

The seed library is organized by bulbs, vegetable, and flower seeds in a big bright cabinet located in our genealogy room, right next to the front desk. Seeds in the seed library are free to everyone, anytime, no library card required. Happy garden dreaming!

Did you know there's an International Dark Sky Park right in our neighborhood? Cheboygan is a premiere place for sky-watching!

One week from today, on Monday, October 26, the Headlands Dark Sky Park will be hosting a Full Moon Hike at 8pm. The Headlands is an Emmet County Park, a Michigan Dark Sky Preserve, and a designated International Dark Sky Place! The park, trails, and dark sky viewing area are always open.

Wherever you're sky gazing, pick up one of our Explore Cheboygan Backpacks. Great for kids and adults, the backpacks have books, journals, and tools to enrich your outdoor explorations.

The backpacks have supplies specific to area park features, including as star charts and red-light flashlights in the Headlands International Dark Sky Park backpack. The parks we currently feature:

• Cheboygan State Park, with a concentration on beach & wildflowers.
• Gordon Turner, with a concentration on birds.
• Ocqueoc Falls, with a concentration on trees & bugs.
• Black Mountain, with a concentration on trees and flowers.
• Headlands Dark Sky Park, with tools for exploring the night sky.

Library of Things items cannot be placed on hold, but you can see descriptions of items on the online catalog and check what's on the shelves at any given moment. Whether you're venturing into the Dark Sky Park or just strolling a block over to our Rails-to-Trails trail, grab a backpack and explore!

Three weeks from today: it's our next CAPL Team Jigsaw Puzzle Competition!

On Sunday, November 8th, from 1:30-3:30pm, teams will compete to complete a new, unopened, 500-piece puzzle. Teams may have no more than 4 members, including the Team Captain. Team Captains must be 13 or older. The puzzles are not children's puzzles, but team members can be any age. Serious puzzlers, teens, families, friends: all are welcome!

Our Team Puzzle Competition will consist of one round of 10 teams due to time and space constraints. Team captains must register with the library and are responsible for assembling their teams. The library will not be able to help find team members or teams to join.

This event is free and open to everyone: no library card required. A prize will be awarded to the first team to complete the puzzle or, if time runs out, to the team with the least amount of pieces left at 3:30pm.

To register, Team Captains may simply stop by the front desk, call (231-627-2381) during our open hours, or message us here. Looking to practice your skills before the competition? Come on over and take a puzzle from our jigsaw puzzle swap. Happy puzzling!

The library is open 10:00-3:00 on Saturdays, and the Friends' Book Book from 10:30-2:00. Whether on the trail or in the building, we look forward to seeing you!

Did you know that, like the library, the Detroit Lions host regular blood drives? Be part of something amazing this month and be a blood donor. You might just win four tickets to the Detroit Lions Thanksgiving game!

Blood donation saves lives in our community every day. Next Thursday, October 22nd, from 12:00-4:30, come to the library to make a donation. In just an hour, you could save as many as 3 lives right here in our area.

Walk-ins to our drive are welcome, but appointments are preferred. You can sign up with a call to Versiti (866-642-5663), call us at the library (231-627-2381), or sign up online. The link in the comments will take you directly to the portal where you can see what time slots are available for our drive.

The Lions have been partnering with Versiti for several years now, and they're excited to offer our donors the chance to win tickets to the big game. Everyone involved agrees: donors save lives and are the real "MVPs."
Thanks for helping us continue to help our community!

One month from today, on Thursday, November 19th, at 6:00pm, we are so excited to welcome Cheboygan Brewing Company!

Cheboygan Brewing Company might be familiar to you, as this hometown business sells their product, not only on Main Street, but across several states. You might also have contributed to-- or benefitted from-- one of their local efforts, like a beach cleanup or a Pints for a Purpose donation.

Now is your chance to hear from the folks behind the CBC scenes! We'll have a panel discussion featuring the neighbors who make Cheboygan Brewing Company such a success. They'll be touching on a wide range of topics, from establishing the brewery to the complexities of flavor development to the benefits (and challenges) of doing business in downtown America today.

After the presentation, attendees are invited to an exclusive happy hour at the brewery just 2 blocks away on Main Street.

This presentation is free and open to all, no registration required. It will be held in our lower level Center for Community Programs, fully accessible by elevator, equipped with full restrooms and flexible seating. The brewery happy hour afterward is, of course, restricted to those 21 and over.

Curious about small business? Craft brewing? Community connection? Come on over to the library for Brew Talk!

Your registration is not complete until you've paid your fee and received confirmation from a staff member.

We hope you can join us for this fun evening!

Teens, of you're looking for something to do between the homecoming parade and school, we've got it for you: it's Boba, Books, & Bingo!

That's right: come on over to the library this Friday, October 16th, 2026, at 3:30 to enjoy boba on us while we play bingo and talk books: it's going to be a blast! Bring your own book or grab one when you get here-- we'll provide everything else for the afternoon.

Boba, Books, & Bingo is offered at no cost to all teens regardless of the school you attend. No registration is required: drop on in. Just remember the library closes at 5:00 so have a plan if you're staying in town for the parade. Questions? Call the library (627-2381) to talk to Miss Teagan any day this week.

Happy Homecoming Week, Cheboygan! Did you know? Here at the library, we have Cheboygan graduates and retired CAS teachers and aides on staff!

Homecoming 2026 in Cheboygan includes spirit week theme days, a powderpuff football game, and of course, a parade! The parade starts at 6pm on Friday. They’ll march down Main St, starting just north of Court, turning onto Division & again on Maple, to the football field.

The library is a one-block walk from prime parade viewing on Main *or* Division, and not too much further to reach the football field via the trail. Feel free to park in one of our lots Friday evening. You can even use our 24/7 wifi to post your pictures of homecoming highlights to your own social media pages.

Have fun, everyone!
