Chelsea Police Investigating Fatal Motor Vehicle Incident Involving Two-Year-Old Child

At approximately 9:40 p.m. on October 14, Chelsea Police officers responded to the area of 156 Bellingham Street following a report that a young child had been struck by a motor vehicle.

Upon arrival, officers located a two year old female child suffering from serious injuries. Chelsea Police officers, alongside the Chelsea Fire Department and emergency medical personnel, provided emergency medical aid at the scene.

The child was transported to Cambridge Health Alliance in Everett, where she was later pronounced deceased.

Preliminary information indicates that the vehicle operator is the boyfriend of the child’s mother. The incident occurred shortly after the mother and child were dropped off in front of their home on Bellingham Street.

The operator was interviewed by Chelsea Police detectives and Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office, and has since been released.

Based on preliminary witness statements and evidence gathered during the ongoing investigation, this incident appears to be a tragic accident. Investigators continue to review the circumstances surrounding the event.

Statement from Chief Keith E. Houghton:

“This is a tragic incident involving the death of a very young child. On behalf of the Chelsea Police Department, I extend our deepest condolences to the child’s family and loved ones. Our officers and emergency responders provided immediate assistance at the scene and did everything possible to help save the young child. Our thoughts are with her family during this unimaginable loss, and we ask the community to respect their privacy during this extremely difficult time.”

The Chelsea Police Department will release additional information as appropriate and consistent with the ongoing investigation.

Faith & Blue 2026 | Fourth Stop: Al Huda Society! 💙🤝🕌

Our Faith & Blue 2026 journey continues! On October 9, the Chelsea Police Department proudly joined members of Chelsea’s Muslim community at Al Huda Society for our fourth community engagement event!

The evening brought together members of CPD, community leaders, and local residents for meaningful conversations, shared experiences, and a meal together. It was an opportunity to sit across the table from one another, ask questions, exchange perspectives, and strengthen the relationships that make Chelsea such a special community.

These gatherings remind us that community policing isn't just about the work we do on the streets. It's about the relationships we build, the conversations we have, and the trust we earn along the way.

This special gathering was coordinated in collaboration with Mohamed Lamaallem of Al Huda Society, whose efforts helped bring our department and the community together. We extend our sincere appreciation to Mohamed, Al Huda Society, and Chelsea’s Muslim community for their warm hospitality, delicious food, and willingness to engage in open and thoughtful dialogue.

Four events, four faith communities, and one shared commitment to a stronger, more connected Chelsea! 💙
