MILES OF SMILES: Thursday afternoon marked the culmination of four weeks of training, practice, and work for Betz Elementary cross country runners as they participated in their annual cross country meet. On a one-mile course around school grounds and the adjacent Hagelin Park, students raced against the clock trying to log their personal bests. Cheered on by staff members, parents, and paced by members of the Cheney High School cross country team, these Vikings found their stride, pride, and joy in running.

The annual program, spearheaded by Betz Elementary teachers Cameron Schmidt and Julie Mitchell with assistance from community member Kari Silvers, students learned more about the art of running. Practices over the fall consisted of warm-ups, pacing coaching, running games, and running for different lengths of time. Swipe to see more joy

RUBBLE ANYONE? Elementary students at Home Works! are discovering the real-world jobs portrayed by characters on one of their favorite shows, Paw Patrol. Today's lesson focused on construction, the specialized field of Rubble, one of six core pups featured on the show.

Students had an opportunity to explore the equipment, learn what each can do, and even try their hand at the truck horn. Hands-on learning at its finest

IT MUST BE A SIGN: Step into Keeley McPartland's first period American Sign Language (ASL) class at Cheney High School and chances are, you'll feel inclined to join in. With a large circle spanning the entire classroom, students practice signing back and forth, talking about everything under the sun from what day it is, to what they had for breakfast. McPartland incorporates 'daily calendar' time into every day, a way to build classroom community, get students communicating, and learn more about their interests and what's going on in their lives.

"One thing I emphasize from the beginning is that you cannot learn a language by yourself," said McPartland. "It takes teamwork! I want my students to feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, laughing at themselves, and supporting one another. We are all learning together."

Using GLAD strategies (Guided Language Acquisition Design), visual learning, movement, and modeling, McPartland makes her classes meaningful, and memorable.

"I take the vocabulary we are learning and turn it into fun songs, routines, conversations, and real-life situations they can actually use."

McPartland recognizes that learning a new language is hard, the equivalent to a baby learning language for the very first time. And just like babies, they need lots of repetition, modeling, encouragement, and opportunities to practice.

"My favorite part is watching students go from being nervous about signing to confidently communicating with each other," said McPartland. "Those little moments when something finally clicks, or when students start using ASL naturally without even realizing it, are the best!"
