Despite the war for American independence raging around them, county courts continued to govern across the state of North Carolina. Probate and estate settlements, land transfers, tax administration, and criminal prosecutions still needed handling and the courts operating during war demonstrated that civil government continued even as royal authority collapsed around them.

63% of all our state's practicing lawyers hang their shingles in just five counties and those counties are Wake, Mecklenburg, Guilford, Durham, and Forsyth. That means that 37% of the state's attorneys serve the other two-thirds of the Tar Heel State's population.

The Chief Justice's Commission on Professionalism (CJCP) is working towards turning "Legal Deserts" into "Legal Oases" and is committed to addressing equal access to legal services for our underserved communities.

“Resolved, that the Flag of the thirteen United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the Union be thirteen stars, white on a blue field, representing a new constellation.” On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress approved the design of our national flag, and we observe as a time to honor our nation's symbol of freedom and democracy.

Visitors to the North Carolina Judicial Center will see the Betsy Ross 250 Flag flying prominently at the Raleigh building's front entrance in honor of the United States of America's semisesquicentennial.

The commemorative banner represents America’s enduring commitment to liberty, self-government, and justice. The flag is just one part of the Judicial Branch’s Celebration 250 campaign recognizing the historic role of N.C. courts in the nation's founding.
