Our fellow Firefighters in Plymouth and Woodbury counties are working hard on multiple fires. Please take time to read. Please share these tips with everyone to ensure that we can continue to have a safe harvest season!
🚒🌽 ENOUGH ABOUT BATTERIES… LET’S TALK HARVEST! 🚜🔥
It’s Fire Prevention Week, and while we’ve spent plenty of time talking about batteries, chargers, and electrical safety, we figured it was time to switch gears and talk about something a little closer to home here in Cherokee County — HARVEST SEASON!
Our area farmers are putting in long hours getting crops out of the fields, and with dry conditions, dust, and hot equipment, it doesn’t take much for a small spark to turn into a serious fire.
🚜 HERE’S OUR BIGGEST REMINDER: HAVE A TRACTOR WITH A DISK HOOKED UP AND READY TO GO!
When a field fire breaks out, every second counts. Having a disk ready to create a firebreak can make a huge difference in keeping a fire from spreading. Don’t wait until you see smoke to start hooking equipment up!
A few other reminders:
🔥 Keep combines and equipment free of dust and debris.
🔥 Check bearings, belts, and other components for overheating.
🔥 Have charged fire extinguishers readily available.
🔥 Keep a water tank or other firefighting equipment nearby if possible.
🔥 If a fire starts, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY! Don’t wait until it’s out of control, and never put yourself in danger trying to stop it.
📸 NOW WE WANT TO SEE YOUR HARVEST PICTURES!
Whether you’re running a combine, hauling grain, working ground, or just enjoying a beautiful Iowa sunset from the tractor cab, DROP YOUR FAVORITE HARVEST PICTURE IN THE COMMENTS! 👇🌽
Let’s fill the comments with pictures of our local farmers doing what they do best!
From all of us at the Cherokee Fire Department, thank you to our area farmers for the long hours and hard work that go into feeding our communities and the world.
Stay safe, watch out for one another, and have a great harvest! 🚒🚜🌽
