Cherokee Central Schools Every Brave, Every Day! As early as 1804, Moravian Missionaries operated a school for Cherokee students at Spring Place in Georgia. Col.

By 1831, three missionaries were operating 11 schools in Cherokee County. Cherokee formal education came to a standstill during the forced removal of the Cherokee to Oklahoma Territory in 1838. However, the Cherokee were so interested in the education of their children that they started a school in Tahlequah, Oklahoma as soon as they were settled. They established The Women Seminary. Will Thomas tried to start Qualla Town Academy for Cherokee students in the late 1800’s but this effort was cut short by the Civil War. During the 1800’s a school was operated by the Quakers through a contract. From 1890 until 1954, the U.S. Indian Service (later renamed the Bureau of Indian Affairs) operated the Cherokee Boarding Schools at Cherokee. Eventually there were elementary day schools at Big Cove, Soco, Birdtown and Snowbird. The Boarding School was closed in June of 1954. In 1962, the community day schools were closed and a central elementary school opened in Cherokee. In May 1975, the seniors graduated in the new Cherokee High School and in August of 1975, grades seven through twelve started their new school year in the new facility. On August 1, 1990, Cherokee Central Schools became a tribally operated school. The Tribal Council authorized the Cherokee School Board to operate the schools under a P.L. 100-297 Grant for the BIA Department of Education. Currently, we have about 1,600 students in grades PK-12. The schools are accredited by the BIA, the State of North Carolina, and by the Southern Association of colleges and Schools. In 1989 the Cherokee Award of Excellence, an honor earned by approximately 200 schools in the entire United States was awarded to the Cherokee High School. The schools provide and at the same time, maintain our proud and sacred Indian heritage. Fall of 1996, Cherokee Central School System established Kituwah curriculum for grades K-6. After years of determination, patience, and hard work, the Ravensford Tract once again became Tribal property for the third time, having come full circle after 166 years. The Tribe gave the National Park Service a larger tract of land joining the Blue Ridge Parkway in exchange for the Ravensford Tract.

A Culture of Caring, Connection, and Laughter!

Cherokee Central Schools had the honor of welcoming Chance Lee Rush to campus for a day filled with inspiration, connection, and plenty of laughter!

Chance is a Native American motivational speaker, comedian, actor, and former collegiate athlete who travels throughout Native communities sharing messages of encouragement, resilience, and personal growth through humor and storytelling.

He started his day touring CCS and joining us in celebrating a special Decision Day milestone for one of our student-athletes. He then spent time with our varsity football team, sharing an important message about one thing we can always control in life: our individual character. A powerful reminder that our choices, actions, and how we treat others define who we are, both on and off the field.

Chance wrapped up the day with our staff during our Culture of Caring Day, bringing plenty of laughter while reminding us of our mission, our purpose, and why we show up each day for our students, families, and CCS community.

Sometimes, the best motivation comes through laughter, shared experiences, and simply coming together to remember the difference we make.

His messages throughout the day reflected our Cherokee Core Values, especially Strong Individual Character, Sense of Humor, Group Harmony, and Sense of Place. They reminded us that Living Gadugi means supporting one another, leading with character, and recognizing the importance of the relationships that make our Braves family strong.

A big Sgi to Chance Rush for sharing his time, energy, and humor with our CCS community! Thank you for reminding us that laughter can bring us together, character guides our actions, and caring for one another helps keep our Braves in Balance.

A Huge Sgi to Our Fire Prevention Week Partners.

Cherokee Central Schools would like to extend a heartfelt Sgi to EBCI Cherokee Fire and Rescue and the U.S. Department of the Interior Wildland Fire teams for spending this week with our students during Fire Prevention Week!

Throughout the week, these dedicated professionals provided age appropriate fire prevention lessons for every grade level, from Pre-K through 12th grade. Our youngest Braves enjoyed classroom stories and visits from Sparky the Fire Dog and Smokey Bear, while older students participated in presentations focused on fire safety, prevention, and protecting our community.

We wrapped up the week with a career exploration and workforce development session for our juniors and seniors. Our panel included EBCI enrolled members and a Cherokee High School alumnus who shared their personal journeys into firefighting careers, highlighting different pathways through higher education, specialized training, and hands-on experience.

One message echoed throughout the week: We are all stewards of the land, and fire prevention starts with each of us. Our students have the unique opportunity to learn from both structural and wildland firefighters who dedicate their lives to protecting our people, homes, and one of our greatest treasures, our lands.

This week brought our Cherokee Core Values to life through Sense of Place, Honoring the Past, Strong Individual Character, and Educating the Children. By teaching our students the importance of prevention, personal responsibility, and caring for our homeland, we are preparing the next generation to carry these values forward.

We deeply value our continued partnerships with both agencies and the many ways they invest in our students throughout the year. To every firefighter and team member who took time out of their week to educate, inspire, and connect with our Braves, Sgi!

Protecting our people, preserving our land, and educating future generations. It takes all of us! ❤️💛

Cherokee Central Schools – Shelter in Place Update

At approximately 12:54 PM today, Cherokee Central Schools briefly implemented a shelter-in-place procedure due to a situation in the surrounding area, not directly on our campus. The shelter in place was lifted at 1:07 PM, lasting approximately 13 minutes.

We want to remind our families that a shelter in place is not a lockdown. It is a precautionary safety measure that keeps students and staff safely inside school buildings while a situation is assessed. It does not necessarily indicate an immediate threat or danger.

The safety of our students and staff remains our top priority. We appreciate the understanding and cooperation of our Braves families.

CCS Transportation Update – Rough Branch

Attention families in the Rough Branch area:

We have been notified that a tree limb is down on a phone line along the right side of Rough Branch, preventing the school bus from passing through.

A school van has already left campus and is on its way to pick up students in the affected area. Please be on the lookout for the van.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to safely transport our students.
