Cherokee Indian Police Department

10/24/2026

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the Cherokee Indian Police Department announces the line-of-duty death of Detective Jeff Smith.
Detective Smith tragically passed away this afternoon while performing his duties, doing what he loved most—serving and protecting his community.
Today the Cherokee Indian Police Department has lost a valued member of our law enforcement family, and our community has lost a dedicated public servant.
Our hearts, thoughts, and prayers are with Detective Smith’s family, friends, fellow officers, and all those whose lives he touched. We ask that the community keep his loved ones and the entire Cherokee Indian Police Department in their prayers during this incredibly difficult time.
Please give his family some privacy and time to grieve. Service announcements will be announced later.
Sgi,
Chief of Police
Carla Neadeau
