The Alfalfa County Sheriff's Office prioritizes community safety as students return to classrooms across Cherokee, Burlington, Helena, Jet and Aline . The Sheriff and Deputies use several critical rules and safety protocols to protect kids on rural highways, county roads, and local town streets.
🛑 Strict Traffic & School Zone Enforcement
Deputies heavily monitor school zones and transit corridors during peak morning and afternoon hours.
• School Zone Speeds: Drivers must strictly obey the reduced, blinking speed limits in all designated school zones.
• Distraction-Free Driving: Using a handheld cell phone while driving through an active school zone violates Oklahoma law and carries heavy fines.
• Crosswalk Safety: Drivers must yield completely to pedestrians in crosswalks and are legally prohibited from stopping or blocking a crosswalk area.
🚌 Rural Highway Bus Rules
Because many students travel across open county roads and major rural routes, school bus regulations are aggressively enforced to prevent accidents.
• The Red Stop Arm: On all two-lane or undivided roads, traffic moving in both directions must come to a complete stop when a school bus extends its red arm.
• Maintain Distance: Drivers must stop at least 10 feet back from a school bus to give children a safe perimeter to enter and exit.
• Never Pass from Behind: It is strictly illegal to pass a stopped school bus from behind while its red lights are flashing.
🚸 Stranger Awareness & Personal Safety
The Sheriff’s Office encourages parents to have proactive, serious conversations with their kids before the school year gets busy.
• The "No Stranger" Rule: Remind children never to talk to strangers, accept gifts, or get into an unknown vehicle without explicit parental permission.
• Emergency Info: Ensure younger children fully memorize their full name, home address, and a parent's primary phone number.
• Buddy System: Whether walking to a local school or waiting at a rural highway bus stop, kids should always use the buddy system and stay in groups.
🚨 Emergency Planning for Parents
• Contact Updates: Ensure your child's school has an updated emergency contact card featuring current phone numbers and list of authorized pick-up individuals.
• Report Activity: If parents, students, or staff notice any suspicious vehicles or behavior around local bus stops or campuses, report it immediately to the Alfalfa County Sheriff's Office at (580) 596-3269.

Keep Your Fingers and Your Friends!!!
This is the weekend where someone in the U.S. will not end up with all 10 fingers! 🖐️🧨
Let’s not make that person your cousin Greg.

We love a good backyard pyrotechnic show as much as the next person, but let’s be real—your DIY neighborhood display is essentially just "manual fireworks" without a launch team. As you celebrate, follow these rules so you don't become the human equivalent of a firework fail video:

Keep your distance: Set a safety perimeter of at least ≥ 35 feet. If aerial explosives go off too soon, you want to be as far from that chaotic energy as humanly possible.
One at a time: Do not light the whole box up at once like a scene straight out of an action movie.
No "Dud" relights: If a firework is too shy to explode, leave it alone! Treat it with water and throw it away.
Water is your best friend: Keep a bucket of water nearby, and douse the spent fireworks in it before tossing them in the trash.

Remember, firework safety isn't rocket science, but it is science. Alcohol and fireworks don't mix, so put the drinks down if you're lighting the fuse.

HAVE A SAFE AND HAPPY HOLIDAY!!!
