Each year on September 30, Children’s Choice celebrates Founders’ Day. We take this day to celebrate our founders, Dr. Bill and Dr. Carolyn Eberwein.
As someone who had the privilege of spending a lot of time with both of them in my personal life and professional career, I am often asked what they were like. Dr. Bill was a dreamer, always thinking about possibilities. He wasn’t afraid to take risks, and people were drawn to him because of that. There was just something about him that made the impossible seem possible. We all loved to sit and talk with him because, when you were done, you felt you could do anything.
Dr. Carolyn had been by his side since they were 14. Having dealt with the reality that sometimes things aren’t possible, even when you want them to be, she was more pragmatic than my father. Her skill, her God-given gift, was taking an idea and turning it into processes that could be followed and easily understood. Once she focused on something, you knew the process and procedure manual was not far behind.
Children’s Choice is here because God, in His infinite wisdom, placed the two of them together and gave them a deep love for each other and a desire to serve those in need. We are here because God gave Dr. Bill a vision to help widows and orphans. We are here because Dr. Carolyn took that vision and worked to turn it into an organization called Children’s Choice. Their love for each other and for the God they both served with all their hearts turned a crazy idea into reality. Neither could have or would have done it alone. On September 30 of each year, we celebrate the fact that together, with God’s blessing, they were able to achieve the impossible.
